hi there! I was missing in action last week, I went to the Unesco World Heritage listed Kihnu Island, believe it or not, albeit in Estonia, I have never been there before. That was on my wall of shame till last friday. Now I got rid of it.... we went with a colleague to introduce our new exhibition (on the treasures of the viking era from archaeological findings) and I drew sea monsters again with kids - and parents. So happy when parents participate, hey, I am even happy if they hesitantly touch a pen. I am not asking for much, I know how terrified grown-ups are of drawing, cause they´ve been taught all wrong. They´ve been taught there is a right and wrong way to draw. so stupid... I tell everyone: it is not about drawing "well enough" or "badly" it is about whether you want to draw or you don´t. If you want to just do it, anyway, the island is kinda like the Estonian version of Jeju in that it has a very unique nature and geography, it has sand dunes and some of the rarest plants in the country, and the main livelyhood comes from the sea (fishing).

watching:
38 Police squad - I love this so much. I like the ensemble and the independence of the characters - finally a drama where people make their own decisions. I love the musi, the theme songs Run and Cool.. and the sound effects at some moments. I feel like I can concentrate on the action, I dont notice what anyone is wearing or if there is daylight or evening or what their apartment looks like, I just follow what they are plotting, doing, planning... I like how the spiderweb grows bigger and bigger and more intricate.
but too few BTS clips :-( maybe I don´t know where to look for them. I want to see more of how they filmed this stuff.

Let´s fight, ghost! - maybe slightly stiff and entertainment-only, I am not too exited over this.

don´t have time for much else right now. been updating myself on newest music instead. our Jüri Pootsmann´s new video "Nii või naa" is partially filmed on the street I cross every day to work and you can see houses under construction that are right opposite our museum (I wonder why they left the museum out, have we been in too many videos already?)
and I really like the new album of RHCP
also, one of my favorite bands Traffic where our 2015 ESC artist Stig plays is releasing a new album in 2 days.
and estonian artists are getting a loooooot of comments from foreigners on Youtube.... looks like high times are coming for our bands and singers!

Your life sounds so interesting. Maybe someday I can watch drama less (or retire) so that I can have time to do some interesting stuff -like learning how to draw and travel? I took some drawing classes before, but never find the time to practice (of course blaming drama watching). I enjoy reading your comments :)

I guess whoever makes life interesting has much to do with the disposition of the person. With that said, I think Redfox has quite an interesting personality to begin with. There are so many things I want to do, but keep procrastinating and giving excuses about having no time to do this and that, while passively watching the days go by and doing nothing much on the days off work except safely hiding in my own reclusive world of dramas, binge watching episode after episode.

I've been wanting to seriously learn to play the keyboard, but all I did was printed the score sheets of music I love, just to have them collect dust on the piano stool, and in 10 years, I only learnt 2 or 3 pieces, that's really pathetic. As for drawing, though I admire beautiful artwork, I can't really draw, I can't even draw a decent smiley face on a post-it-note for my workmates, the smiley faces I drew didn't look "smiley" enough. But I've started to work on coloring books, though it is not strictly drawing, combining the colors requires some some creativity too, and it is fun!

After watching Dear My Friends, it shook me to the core, and made me ponder about my own bucket list, what I really want to do and experience before this life ends. It is really a wake up call for me.

you can still become famous by drawing so badly peoples eyes bleed. Drwaing badly can be your asset! I know many artists in fact who say they cannot draw and they are super famous

For me, it was CJW's drama, Twenty Again, that really shook me to my core. I just felt sorry for her character there, about the things that she had to give up on because she had a baby so early and she was unfortunate enough to be with an emotionally manipulative husband. While we do not have the same background, her character's journey made me want to come up with my own bucket list and to live life to the fullest. No ifs, buts, regrets. So this year, Iam about to cross two things off my bucketlist. I procrastinated a lot also but I'm lucky to have friends who pushed me in the right direction also.

And, redfox, thanks for sharing about your trip and your opinion about drawing. I've recently got into the adult coloring books. I'm kicking myself for not getting it into sooner. (Thanks for the inspiration also, Cindy from the Producers.) While different from drawing, I've hesitated doing it for a while as I believe I am not talented enough and that I shouldn't bother. While I am still not talented, I'm glad that I picked it up as it is a great stress reliever and I am learning a lot through research.

I marathoned all 8 eps of Beautiful Mind, and at the end of it, my heart bled and ached so much for our desolate MIB (Lee Young Oh always wear black, black shirt, black tie, black trousers). Though he suffered from ASD, he is strictly speaking not a sociopath, as he had been strictly trained by his dad to restrain himself and hide the inert emotions. He does not go around hurting others with any evil intent. His deference submission to his dad drove him into putting break neck effort to read facial expressions and mimic the behaviour of normal people in order to hide his abnormality.

While his dad had been cautiously guarding him to protect him, he also had been berating and condemning him for his disorder. What's more, the so called normal people he had trusted, particularly Park Se Young, the woman he had invested so much effort to "pretend" to love betrayed him deceitfully for her own self-interest. Ironically, in a way, she is more of a "sociopath" in displaying no qualms about betraying him in the most ruthless manner without an iota of empathy.

This drama also keeps me wondering, though someone with ASD cannot empathise, but is capable of feeling all emotions, like pain, anger, happiness, sadness, etc. Therefore, is he capable of really falling in love? It would be interesting to see how the love between LYO and Gye Jin Sung unfolds, though imo, she looks a bit young and naive.

I feel like dropping Doctors but is still holding on for the time being for KRW. Probably the screenwriter made an attempt to salvage it after the tirade of criticisms, it looked like HHH’s monologue was intentionally explaining to the viewers why he was so cheesy, i.e. he envied the childish and carefree way those in love behaved towards each other ?!

As for Uncontrollably Fond, thanks to Javabeans for enlightening us that the original Korean title actually means Lightly, Ardently, which describes the delicate love of Shin Joon-young for No Eul. This screenwriter is good at juggling anguish and despair to amplify the internal conflicts in the mind of her characters, her dramas never fail to give a melancholic and pensive mood. I loved her sorrowful and angsty Will It Snow For Christmas, so I’m sure we are in for quite a rough emotional roller coaster ride.

Finally Yiruma is coming! I just bought the ticket to his Kiss The Rain concert today, I feel so excited to be able to see him perform live for the first time since I bought his First Love CD in 2001, omg, that was 15 years ago!

Have a great weekend all ! :)

I love the colour and clothing choice for Young-oh, because Jang Hyuk is totally rocking the black. Wish he'd gotten a better hairstyle though, but I won't quibble because Jang Hyuk is totally rocking the role.

I have liked Jin-sung much better once she started thinking before she leaps. Park So-dam and Jang Hyuk have some lovely chemistry, and if there is romance, I hope the drama develops it well (don't want an overblown, bleedin' heart one with copious tears).

I've a weak spot for man wearing all black, and I was in for a treat this week with Jang Hyuk wearing all black all the time under his white doctor coat and also NGM appearing in an impeccable black suit in BGS too. :)

I don't mind JH's nerdy hairstyle in BM, imo, it suits his role in BM, a good change from that flamboyant side part in Fated To Love You.

I think there is a good chance that LYO will "make extra effort" to get close to Jin-Sang and eventually falls in love with her. After the ordeal he had been through at the hospital, what he needs most is trust, to be able to trust someone and to be trusted by someone, and JS is the person who has dismissed all doubts about him and is wiling to extend a hand to pull him out of the doldrums. Though he may not have the capacity to impulsively love someone due to ASD, the more important thing is his willingness to :make an effort" to love, this I think is the most precious thing a person with ASD can give to others.

Se-young felt bitterly betrayed as a boyfriend with ASD felt repulsive for her in the first place. But for the case of JS, she seemed quite sympathetic of YO's predicament, and accepted him for who he really is. So probably, they will develop a supportive kind of love, though it may not be passionate. It is the most beautiful kind of long lasting love between a man and a woman built not upon shot-lived passion but enduring trust.

Beautifully put. That's what I hope for Jin-sung and Young-oh, because effort can mean so much, and trust is so crucial to their relationship. I think Jin-sung will be able to appreciate Young-oh's effort as it should be if and when they get to that stage. After Min-jae and Dad, Young-oh deserves to be loved by someone who accepts him for who he really is and yet still appeals to his better self in making the "right" decisions - episode 7 was beautiful in that aspect.

Oh god, Jang Hyuk's hairstyle in Fated was part of the reason I didn't go near that drama. I think I like him better in serious roles.

Absolutely agree, willingness to put in effort is everything, not only in larger than life kind of love, but eve more important in sustaining the ordinary kind of love in real life.

Compared to manipulative Yoo Jung in CITT who has a narcissistic streak, Jung Hyuk's LYO is more likable, though he feels cold and calculated, at least he is straightforward in his dealings.

lol, yeah that Fated hairstyle of his is downright greasy. haha.

Haha I didnt like JH in Fated too, but just to let you know, his character changed his hairstyle halfway through that show.

Happy Friday Beanies!
Sydney has been taken over by PokemonGo fanatics and my area has 1000 people (no exaggeration!) every night staking out the playground near my apartment to catch rare Pokemon. It's madness and I can't take my kid there anymore. But it is nice and amusing to see people of all races and walks of life having fun discussing how to catch imaginary creatures. Haha.

I'm really enjoying my current dramas- Beautiful Gong Shim is my guilty pleasure drama that makes me LOL and brightens up my day.
Doctors I'm enjoying for the female lead and the romance, also some of the trauma emergencies make me nostalgic for when I was working.
Beautiful Mind is the most mentally engaging and intriguing one- I'm glad I rewatched the first 4 episodes because I appreciated the mystery story so much more. So far the writer has been doing a good job so I'm hopeful it will stay good.
I'm lagging behind on the episode 8 of BM and the recent Police Unit 38 ones (I stopped because I got busy JUST as it got exciting ?), also Hapi Mari, so I aim to play catch up soon! Somehow ?

I never realized how editing made such a difference to the drama watching experience till recently. At least I think it's the editing- beanies please correct and educate me if I'm wrong.
In Doctors infamous kiss scene, and the motorcycle crash, the ending scenes were so over dramatized by the editing resulting in unnecessary and inappropriate pauses to the scene making it feel unnatural. The starting scenes of the following episode flowed so much better and made a lot more sense even though they had the exact same scenes in them.
Also, in BGS I've felt cheated by a few closing scenes which were misleading about what would happen next.
Has anyone else noticed this? I don't know why but I've been bothered by it recently.

Oh yes and also I forgot to add BM- I think the first few episodes were super confusing because they weren't put together very well (maybe the time crunch?) so much so that people gave up before it got more interesting. So yeah, for some reason the shows I'm watching recently could do with being better put together.

I'm also on the rewatch trail for Beautiful Mind, and find that I can better appreciate the details and certain bits of dialogue that now take on extra meaning. Jang Hyuk is truly awesome in this role, and even though the acting is solid across the board, he easily carries the show. He's consistently solid, but I think the complexity of this role and how he's tackled it so far really make him stand out.

Yes, editing is important for flow and continuity. Some scenes just jump to the next without making sense and disrupt the narrative flow and mood, and it's very distracting for the viewer. It's not something overlaying music can solve. There was a tone of editing and directing boo-boos in Goodbye Mr Black, for example, which really irritated me. In episode 8 of Beautiful Mind, there's a scene towards the end that's especially jarring (for me, that is). The editing (and probably also directing) was so off in that scene.

I'm sure more knowledgeable beanies can provide more info.

About the misleading ending scenes - I agree about feeling cheated by them. I noticed them in BGS mostly, so far.

How far are you with Hapi Mari ? I caught up with episode 3. You were right, the story moves fast - which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
--- POSSIBLE SPOILER about episodes 1-3 ---
The thing that I'm not understanding is: Chiwa and Hokuto are married, right? I believe they filed their marriage certificate and he told his grandpa the news. They are even now living together. But later on, the marriage is sometimes referred to as in the future: "... are going to get married...", etc. Perhaps it is an incorrect translation, or maybe they are referring to the wedding ceremony?
Also, I'm not able to decipher Hokuuto's feelings towards Chiwa. He seems wanting to kiss (and more?). But is he just teasing her? Or has he actually fallen for her? I know he appreciates some aspects of her personality but I couldn't tell if he truly loves her yet.
--- END of SPOILER ---

About his feelings, I think he is interested and attracted to her, and since they are married he naturally wants to have sex. It's a physical need after all. This is a dorama after all and they have sex more naturally than in dramas.

Actually sometimes I think the way they depict sex is too cold, while Koreans need to be mad in love before they give a pick on the lips (just talking about dramas)

From watching many Asian dramas I have deduced some marriage customs. There is the legal marriage, which just involves the submission of paperwork to the government agency and the wedding ceremony which is the public acknowledgement of the Union. Sometimes in dramas these two things are done close together and other times the ceremony is put off if secrecy or family objections are an issue.
It is probably the ceremony that may be held later, though she has been registered as his legal wife.

Yeah, some of the recent dramas have been very strange on the editing front (and it takes a lot for me to notice lol).
And imo dramaland really needs to slow down on the (over)use of slowmo scenes.

I probably should post this under Beautiful Gong Shim recap, but I’ve missed the boat to join in the exciting discussion.

Since JS & DT had conspired beforehand, I do not quite understand why JS had to:
1. bluff GS into giving him DT's door code
2. transform into a pointy ear devil with dagger eyes when he ruthlessly ransacked his room though no one is looking (come on, his butterfly uncle is not that invincible to have him under surveillance in DT’s room right?)
3. nervously hide from DT when he almost bumped into him
I know the intention is to mislead the viewers, but it feels like a contradictory plot hole.

GS's imaginary scene with The Heirs ost blaring in the background - Lee Hong ki's I'm Saying, with DT walked stately down the red carpet while she frantically wrestled with the bodyguard to get through to him was so priceless, lol!! Though probably the song should be changed to BOF ost Paradise as DT is also called Jun Pyo. :)

The love between DT & GS is so refreshingly pure and cutesy but not sticky sweet, it reminds of the puppy love which is so innocent and uncontaminated. It is delightful in itself with its comical moments even without those premeditated cheesy lines and racy skinship which are so common in other current rom-coms. I agree that the only imperfection is DT's noble idiocy, he should initially reveal everything to GS and trust that she is mature enough to handle the complex circumstances surrounding his birth secret. But still, I will miss DT's cheesy wink and GS’s bobbed hair wig for a long time after this drama ends. 

Yes I'm going to miss BGS as much as you after this week ?

I too noticed the plot hole and I can't explain very well either, aside from the fact that perhaps JS was worried his uncle may have had someone watching him (like his evil minion) and he didn't want to have his secret alliance with DT found out. So maybe his "devil eyes stare" was just him being calculative and trying to figure out how to pretend to act evil? ? You can see I'm trying hard to convince myself. Hahaha.

I love UF.. and the whole melo feel..

Thank God BGS, MOW, LR ended.. had started to get really bored of them..

Five enough - give me more of golf couple :( .. I am totally amazed how Sung Hoon hasn't garnered enough attention - He is amazing in New Tales of Giseang (its interesting how I don't ship them in Five enough when they had such an incredible too hot to handle chemistry in NTG), venus, noble my love..and i hear was good in faith as well

Finally watched school 2013 .. :D :D :D .. LJK!!! .. and to watch KWB where he is not the bully :P

Doctors - still watching... i have fun while I watch..

Wanted - the lead actress is not the best..but the series is interesting enough..

LFG - fun!!!

BM - except for JH's screen presence.. not sure what is so great about the drama.. actors are all good.. infact i think now it has gotten more interesting (outside of enjoying JH alone)

Yup..that's the line up for the week :P

It was the WW2 era derogatory term for a Japanese person. Both people in Japan and Japanese-ancestroy Americans who were subjected to terrible racism. You may not know this but America actually rounded up Japanese-ancestry Americans and put them in internment camps during WW2.

Obviously those 3 letters are a logical very short version of the term but the racist use has permanently stained it. So go with J- or in some cases with abbreviations JP ("I really preferred the original JP opening song and don't think they should have replaced it for the US release of the game...").

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Call me old fashioned, but I'd just spell out Japanese instead of abbreviating it. I realize that JP is a country code, but in the USA it also stands for Justice of the Peace.

To make things more confusing, the acronym JAP = Jewish American Princess... a slur that is not only ethnic, but sexist, too.

AJA = WWII-era acronym for Americans of Japanese Ancestry.

Regarding the internment of Japanese-Americans and Japanese resident aliens during WWII, the National Park Service maintains the Manzanar War Relocation Center as a national historic site in California.

https://www.nps.gov/manz/index.htm

Truly one of the darkest chapters in US history. I was shocked out of my gourd the first time I heard of it from a substitute history teacher in the early 1970s. It was not in our text books back then.

All I Asking for is My Body by Milton Murayama is a terrific novel about the Japanese-American experience in the plantation camps of Hawai'i in the years leading up to Pearl Harbor and its aftermath...

Is older woman-younger man romance/marriage commonly accepted in Korea? I read somewhere that female ratio is low..so now they are more open to marrying non koreans also.

And on one hand when noona romances are so celebrated then why are older men-younger grl romances looked down upon!

Kim HyunJoong is shit now, except to his fans. Same as Park YooChun. The general public is slamming them to hell and back. I don't know how long their entertainment careers are going to last after this, and if they do last long, how big it can get.

And why not go back to the same woman? There are dysfunctional and poisonous relationships all over the world and not everyone breaks them off even though they should.

What's wrong with Mike being a father? The only "crime" he has is being an unwedded one. Nothing too bad.

Why yes, older women/younger men relationships are accepted in Korea. They even have a name for those kinds of relationships :YeonSang Couples. I know Seo InGuk's parents are like that. Baek JiYoung and Jung SukWon too. Eh... who else. There are quite a few and it was a trend in dramas during a certain period.

Older men and younger girl romances are not bad. They're just uncomfortably unbalanced when the girl is much too young, like a 40 year old guy with a 24 year old lady. In a patriarchal society and one with as much emphasis on respecting those older than you as Korea, the power imbalance skewed in the men's favour make some squint in judgement. Also, since the Joseon times, there have been 50 year old men marrying 16 year old girls. Eh, that just gives you an idea of why older-men/ younger women relationships make modern-age people uncomfortable now.

Then I am assuming that Hyeri must have got a lot of flak for dating that 40 year old Tony (think)..

But, that's just hypocrisy. either accept if its a love marriage..outsiders shouldn't meddle.. or then accept that 'love' can't conquer age gaps..

All of this is quite prevalent in the East alone i guess..
West is more accomodating, isn't it?

True, I don't really care who people choose as their partners. Not my business. But not everyone thinks the same as us.

What is quite prevalent in the East but not the West? Waaay older guy with a young lady? No, they get flak in the West too. No matter where you are, the opinions vary depending on who you're talking to.

Like, Homosexuality is definitely not as accepted in conservative Korea as compared to the West but it doesn't mean that EVERYONE in Korea opposes it nor does it mean that EVERYONE in the West agrees with it.

I didn't know Koreans are slamming Park Yoochun. Soompi comments made me sick. Most of them were fans defending him and calling the victims sluts and prostitutes who are out to blackmail him of his money. Some even said it was a privilege to be able to do it with him. It makes me feel so sad because it takes so much courage to report rape in Korea, and proving rape is so hard, and yet we have so many fellow women making the victims' lives even harder...

Please note that Soompi comments are not representative of the entire world, just like comments on every other site.

Just because there are the, uhm, vocal ones, it doesn't mean that everyone shares their views. Like how terrorists are overzealous and crazy and make the most noise and chaos but it doesn't mean that the rest of the world agree with them just because we keep quiet.

Koreans are human like me and you. What you think is unfair or wrong will most probably be seen as unfair and wrong to them too. Sure, there may be cultural differences, but in essence we're all the same humans.

One is who is in right mind want to have that in a public toilet? I am not a neat freak but this gross me out. Some claimed that he must have some deep psychological issues and got criticized but I tend to believe in their analysis. Second is that those celebrities are well protected by their agencies and their fans but one can never know how they live. I am amazed that he and his agency kept his innocent and nice image for so long.

Here's a lesson for all Yoochun's bashers who don't even follow the official police statements but based your judgment blindly from what you have read from trash media. I do not know why S Korea does not have laws for subjudice contempt which bars media and netizens from speculation which may jeopardize the investigations but the whole media circus has been well orchestrated.

As a JYJ fan who had followed their careers and seeing the mass oppression and ungrounded rumours levelled at them since leaving their ex-agency, I'm not surprised that those who don't know Yoochun well couldn't even smell such a BIG RAT in all these false allegations.

The police had dropped all charges of sexual assault against him but people like you will continue to judge him from your tainted lenses.

Regarding older men-younger girl relationship, I think the answer will be varied depend on the culture you were brought up in. In my country most people will jump into 'golddigger' assumption when we encounter this kind of scenario. Especially when the age gap is more than 15 years and the girl is really attractive. Not that it always true, but it's hard to not being judgmental when there are many proof that support it.

But I guess other people also feel uncomfortable since it veer really close to lolita complex? Or maybe because somehow it will tip the balance of those relationships too much in the man favor? Since he will be older, have more experience, higher social standing, and also higher financial status. Idk though, somehow it just feels unnatural when the age gap is enormous.

It's not that hard to not be judgmental. Just ignore what you don't have evidence for and see the truth of the particular relationship for yourself. If they really love each other, it will be so obvious.

Eh, what doesn't work for you doesn't mean that it doesn't work for anyone else.

If Kim Hyun Joong is really a serial aborter who constantly commands his girlfriend to get abortions, then I'll have to part ways with him. I like him. I even think I understand him. I definitely feel sorry for him and wonder about his own woundedness but...if it's all true, my patience with him is...at an end.

Thing is, the only ones who know what really went on are those directly involved, aka Kim HyunJoong and his ex-girlfriend.

I cannot claim to be certain in my judgement but with what I have read, I am leaning towards believing the baby's mother. My future actions regarding him will occur as guided by that judgement but I won't be spending days and hours trying to convince someone who believes otherwise. Because I just don't know.

Didn't he apologize last year or the year before for having hit her? This thing ha been going on for so long. As a mother of sons, I'm prone to being on his side...and I do think he's a bit damaged. That doesn't excuse abusiveness or consistently cheating on one's girlfriend if she gets jealous...but.... I just hate the idea of men bullying women into getting abortions. That's the part I'm wondering if I should believe. Will see if he apologizes again.

I'm usually not so interested in entertainment news as I'm more interested in the personas of the actors/actresses in dramas. They are humans too, as such are imperfect, so to idolise them is to set oneself up for disappointment. Though i'm an ardent fan of LJK, I don't follow him on instagram or whatever, I just like him in his dramas and movies. For the case of KHJ, after reading images of his mobile text exchanges with that girlfriend of his in reddit, the only conclusion is, he is absolutely a JERK in every sense of the word..

0

For me, Mike had a child out of wedlock and KHJ has a bunch of rumors that lean towards being true, at least some like the time he apologized for hitting her. Mike's crimes against my moral code are not as high.

That said, I'm not against KHJ so much as just not interested. I'd force myself to decide if I loved or hated him. But I'm not a fan of his acting and not to much in the know of Gen 2 in kpop. If KHJ continues his two part career, I'll take in the media I like from him. But I'm not going out of my way for him.

I'm for romances of any age. So long as both parties are adults even if they met when one was a minor, and they are on somewhat equal ground into their own personal relationship. 20 can date 60 for all I care, as long as there is mutual respect. It just seems rarely treated that way irl and in media.

Sigh, finally the end of this week.

I've been served one too many disappointments this week and it's been making me down in the dumps. Feels like the world is against me. The "I kinda lost it when I couldn't get a shirt to iron straight" that kind of week, hur hur. The not happy even though I should be happy and not angry or sad when I should be angry or sad kind of week. And I've been cranky on the interwebs. Sorry to whomever I might have offended!

Anyways, I've therefore been pouring almost everything into dramas.

Picked up Beautiful Mind this week and the genre, "psychological analysis", has intrigued me. I did PSYCHcaps on my website and I can say that I'm not that in touch with emotions, hur, making the PSYCHcaps a bit ambiguous. I enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed reading Confessions of a Sociopath. They're not something you take seriously like a thesis but offer perspectives that are interestingly different. Sometimes it's not just what is said or written that's as important as the tone and how it's delivered. Reading and watching those are like having to be JungDo - take in more that just what they're telling you; see what they're showing you.

The Good Wife k-ver is giving me !stan! vibes. I love, love, love Jeon DoYeon in this and I've never really watched her dramas before but now I'm a total supporter of hers. I love how she made HyeKyeong so hard yet so vulnerably humane. I did recap of episode 1 and I have to say that while it was difficult (much more than when doing other recaps), it was especially rewarding. I especially loved screen capping Jeon DoYeon's face. In one picture, sometimes you can see everal emotions there.

Police Unit 38 continues to charm and while I had been doing recaps these whole time, with Dramabeans picking it up, I'm going to let them do the heavy lifting while I move on to IMPcaps. I totally expect to pick up on somethings that I would never have picked up if I were to do straight recaps.

Uncontrollably Fond is such a beautiful drama I just couldn't resist recapping it. SO. DAMN. BEAUTIFUL. Although, the colours are really muted. I guess that's part of a melodrama. When will they have a scene in bright sunlight, when? Because I've learnt that sunlight is the magic light that makes everything better.

I'm still doing recaps for 1 Night 2 Days and I have to say that Yoo PD, while having a very different dynamic, has pulled together this episode. So far, he's only had one dud episode in my book (the last part of the Ewha special) and it's incredible how he's recovered from that because 1 Night is back to being enjoyable. (And laugh out loud funny, pffft.)

I did a recap of Episode 8 of Unnie's Slam Dunk and I just have to say that I love that show. Woman power 4eva! I wanna recap it too but looking at (14-1=13) episodes more to recap and catch up to broadcast, I'm a little intimidated, haha. Anyways, onward...

Currently watching Squad 38/Task Force 38/Police Unit 38 (why do dramas have to have so many names?) and loving it! It has an Ocean's 11 kind of feel to it. i'm looking forward to the next episodes.
Can't wait for W-Two Worlds to start. The plot looks interesting and I like the writer from his previous dramas "Nine: Nine Times Travel" and "Queen Inhyun's Man".

I saw the preview they put out for Scaret Heart: Goreyo and the cinematography is really beautiful. There are some gorgeous shots. I wasn't surprised though because the director is the same from "That Winter, The Wind Blows" and there were some fantastic shots in that show.

Also watched the wacky drama Go Princess Go. This was almost to WTF Paris levels at times. And so silly costumes! It was addicting in all it's craziness though. That ending though...

-Re-started The Three musketeers. I had forgotten how wacky fun this was in the beginning.

-Still not started any of the previous or the new batch of dramas since DotS. Should pobably work on that.

The midnight sun is nice for weekends when you can stay up a long time though. A lot of people also go on hikes up mountains during the night.

Happy Friday lovely people!!

First, has anyone seen the film The Wailling? I watched it last weekend with my friend because we were in the mood for something creepy and we both really liked it. I was curious about others take on it.
From what I saw online, many criticized the film for being confusing but I thought it was part of its strength. It looked like the director purposely left out some important information in order to evoke the same feeling as the main character in the viewer.
Usually, the audience is allowed more knowledge, especially in suspense (in the Hitchcock tradition). Therefore, when a character needs to make a decision, you know which decision he/she should make and the suspense comes from the uncertainty of them making the right choice. However, in this case, when the protagonist had to make the ultimate choice at the climax of the story...I knew just as much as him (which was almost nothing) and I truly felt on edge. I did not know who to trust or what to do. I was felt as strongly conflicted as the character. I was really impressed.

I think I might succeed in slowly converting my friend into a Korean entertainment fan. She loved The Wailling and she asked me if we could watch another Korean movie tonight! We are going to watch The Flu. As anyone seen it? The reviews seems good but I would love to have some feedback. Is it more suspense or horror?

I bought tickets to a film festival and they are showing many Korean films! I am so excited to see one on the big screen for the first time! Unfortunately, I could only pick two movies that were playing the weekend I would be in the city, which limited my choices considerably (no Ryu Junyeol:( ). So I am going to see Train to Busan. I hope it's good despite the fact that I am not a huge fan of Zombies...the only exception being Zombieland and the comic The Afterlife with Archie.

Anyways, I also feel the need to share my love for Awl. I probably would have never watched this drama if it weren't for the many positive reviews I've seen because, honestly, the premise on paper sounds incredibly boring...I never expected to love it so much! The show is surprisingly both funny, touching and thrilling! I love all the characters but I especially love Ji Hyunwoo's Lee Suin. Love love love it!!

I am going to miss seeing Ryu Junyeol every week :(

.... sorry I rambled on a bit there...

I saw The Wailing, alone because my friend was too scared by the trailer, and it's a pity for her because it's a truly the best film of this year.

I went for the director Na Hong Jin, whose i loved the previous work, especially The Chaser which is a big time favourite of mine and one of the best thriller ever made imo, and he didn't disappointed me.

The Wailing is masterfully directed: every shot screams Na Hong Jin's ambitious and personal vision, film culture and technical skills.

The photography is to die for: i loved the natural light that they mostly used, it gave a strong feeling of realism, which make the apparitions of ambiguous events (supernatural or not ?) even more disturbing.

The plot itself leaves a lot for the viewer to figure by himself, but it seems to me logical considering that the main subject is religious faith, and what it could mean to lose it. The film doesn't pretend to give a final answer on this point, and on contrary it tries to push us to question what we just saw, as like the last scene with the priest proves it (was it a vision or real? Did his belief create the last image he saw?).

The cast all together played perfectly, though the little girl did an outstanding performance.

It's not an easy film: the tone is very depressing and pessimistic; and overall though the film belongs to the fantastic genre without a doubt, it can be difficult to qualify it and follow the main storyline.
It uses plotlines from differents subgenres: rural thriller, exorcism, zombie films.... Because of that we're not always sure where the director is leading us and what's the point of this display of the such savage violence, but the spiritual meaning delivered is really worth the wait and the patience.

I personally never felt bored, though i admit the pace or the length were the weakest aspects of the film.

I can only recommend it to every lover of supernatural thriller, who look for a dark, intense but elegant piece of art, made by a very brilliant filmmaker, imo the best of its generation.

Thanks for the great review. I haven't seen The Wailing yet but planning on it. I love Na Hong Jin's films. He is multi- talented (writer, director) and his last 2 films were top notch. The Chaser is basically one of my favorite. Ha Jung Woo was amazing in it too and in Yellow Sea.

I'm not that interested in Train to Busan but I'll check it out when it's available online. I love Jung Yumi and Ma Dong Seok.

Finally after so many weeks being busy I could start watching Kdramas again.

My come back started with Doctors . I really like Kim Rae-Won and Park Shin-Hye. Although the story started somehow lame in my eyes as we didn't see really they so fast were attracted to each other a teacher and a minor but now that story happens in their adulthood it's much more acceptable.

I also had a marathon of watching Cheese in the trap. It started great but as it went further it got boring and if not only for Seo Kang-Joon I'd have dropped it.

Happy Friday! It is hard to keep up with all these dramas (not that I am complaining). And I am glad now JB has 3 threads we can talk about ALL dramas- Open Thread, What we are watching, and Weekly viewership ratings. And there are more recaps than ever before (It seems all come out after Thursday- I am still trying to catch up, and again I am not complaining. I am just cursing at myself who can't find more time to catch this all up.

btw How did you like the ending of Lucky Romance? Ryu Joon-yeol got to keep his nickname from Reply 88 -Uh Nam Ryu = 'Anyway husband is Ryu Joon-yeol' (urgh. good only until when) = 'Anyway what's left is Ryu Joon-yeol' (Lucky Romance) heh.

This week there was an article talking about some hot issue/trend by reporters covering entertainment industry [The Fact] Six reporters - GIH, KHG, KMJ, KGM, YSH, GSJ (used only initials, assuming their names are not important) participated in this talk.

GIH: Today's topic is about actresses. Thesedays it is almost called 'actresses famine' because there are less of a new actress. More and more 'Acting dol'(Idol who does acting) are joining for lead and supporting roles.
YSH: Currently Minah in 'Beautiful Gongshim', Suzy in 'Uncontrollably Fond', Nana in 'Good wife', and Jun Hyo-sung in 'Wanted' are working actively. Also dramas to be aired later this year will have many idol stars who take lead and supporting roles. Noticeably in almost all dramas, Acting dols are playing active roles.
GIH: They are so many indeed. We had actors who were idols in dramas before, but this must be the first time we have this many.
KGM: It is true that when you see the casting news of an idol for a highly expected project, there are more voice of worries than optimism. But the expectation on Acting dol seem to be changing.
KHG: Minah of Girl's day is getting positive response from the viewers (for Gongshim). They complain about the plot being cliché, but complement her acting.
YSH: In Girl's day group, there is Hye-ri who became popular for Reply 88, but it was Minah who started the acting first time. She also received the new actress award for the movie 'Holly' in 2013 international movie festival.

KHG: Suzy in Miss A solidified her place as Acting dol doing dramas and movies, but in her case, she gets bad and good reviews. I wonder it depends on characters she plays. There were general opinion that her movie 'Doriwhaga' was too much for her.
KGM: I heard thesedays the idol who is in charge of 'Acting dol' in the group gets acting lessons as part of his/her training. It seems that there is less distinction between being singer and actor.
GSJ: Previously it was known that idol members who were in the center of the Hallyu were casted in the drama to help exports of the drama, so there were lots of criticism about casting idols without considering acting skills. But thesedays people seem to approve their acting talents in addition to their name value.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

KMJ: Public sentiments toward Acting dols seem to be changing in positive direction. Members of idol groups who started acting recently have good skills due to intentional training. Thanks to the training, they are melted into the drama without looking awkward. The viewers with the attitude 'All they need is to be able to act well regardless who they are' approve and applaud these Acting dols.

GIH: Still there are distinction between actor and singer. For example, in the case of Sulli (of f(x)), she received criticism for the movie 'Fashion King' and also got bad review for her acting and presence in the movie 'The Pirates'.
KSJ: The movie 'My New Sassy Girl' recruited Victoria of f(x) who is very popular in China to appeal to the Chinese market, but movie fans were very disappointed with her acting.
YSH: It seems that happens more frequently in web dramas where there are less viewers. There are times video clips showing up in SNS, in which some idols show serious problems in their acting skills.
KGM: Even though there are also actors who are known for 'Foot acting', idols tend to get more 'finger-pointed' on acting because they started as idol.

KHG: Well, since you have to work on both of singing and acting, you are bound to have less time to practice, so you could say that result is given. However, they say recently agencies are keen on this issue, so they put them through hard training, and research the drama character before making decision on casting.
KGM: There are Acting dols who show improvements over time, but there are also cases of them being chosen because of popularity even though their acting is lacking.
KHG: That is right. Especially in the musical field, they say there are cases idols are chosen because of ticket power even though acting skill is seriously lacking.

KGM: Then again, if an idol acts well, he/she is even more noticed because of 'surprise' impact. At times I see idols receive special treatments because they are idols even though their acting is mediocre.
KMJ: Don't you think if they get cast because of popularity, they would not last long? I think personal effort has to follow if they are chosen due to good luck. If you look at the idols who work for a long time, they are mostly the people who can do acting well. (me: Yoon Gae-sang?)

GSJ: I think idols who get in a project should have sufficient acting skills, and try to show good acts. Also production team should avoid to cast incapable idols with no acting talents just to make money.
KGM: Even though prejudice against Acting dols are disappearing, still there are many people with closed-mind against Acting dols. I expect once Acting dols make good examples working hard and actively, situations will be changing.
KMJ: It is true that Acting dols start acting in better condition than newbie actors. Because they already have warm rapport from their fans.

KHG: You can't do well from the get go. A person who is originally singer can't show excellent acting from the start. It is like an actor not being able to show off their explosive singing from the begining. Acting is one of strategies to load into their popularity. Acting idol has to work hard on acting skills as necessary skills, so that they don't leave a question mark when they are casted.
GIH: Also agency should be more cautious to match singers' image and the projects they do, to fit to their ability. Wouldn't it be nice to get a review like 'She looks perfect fit like she wore her own clothes' and make the viewers happy?

It is nice to see more idols who can do acting, but will that be all good with these manufactured idols?

While I'm good with all those acting-dols, I also feel disappointed that the movie/drama industry didn't cast more of former child actors for its projects. I mean, sure, some of them get insanely popular (Kim Sohyun, Kim Yoojung, Yeo Jingu) but the others are fading away or still relegated to play the teenager counterpart. It's baffling that they chose to use acting-dols with questionable acting ability rather than a much more capable former child actor. It's sad that we only get to watch them on a handful projects.

Maybe I'm one of the few who are watching The Good Wife . I'm actually thankful to tVN for bringing back the A-list actresses in kdramaland (Kim Hye Soo and now, Jeon Do Yeon). It's my first time seeing her and wow! She really owns her character. It's as if she had already mastered how to control her emotions really well. I really recommend it to everyone especially those who are wanting to deviate watching romcoms for a while.

Before, I clearly remember my sister bragging about how good of an actress Jeon Do Yeon is especially after she saw several of her films in cinema. I didn't take that into account back then coz I was busy watching Kdramas and I'm not much into films.
After watching The Good Wife , I now CLEARLY understand my sister's praises about her. She really is The Queen.

I've been fan-girling on her for a long time after watching her movies. I watched Secret Sun-shine before too and had no idea it was the film that took her to Cannes where she end up winning best actress and the critics approved.
Song Kang Ho and Jeon Do Yeon were the perfect pair (not in a dramaland romantic way) in balancing each other well throughout the whole film.

She is an actress for the critical eyes and the hard to please so called critical film reviewers.

I can't wait to watch next episodes of 'Police Unit 38'. I like everyone in the scam team, and like how newbie Lee Sunbin(22) plays Jo Mi-joo (cool and natural). Here is her interview [Star News, OSEN]

Lee debuted in 2014 and only appeared in 2 dramas before (in 'Madame Antoine' as a customer, and in OHYA as Jin-sang's Monday girl -Did anybody recognize her??) "I started as a musical actress while I was in high school. Besides acting, I worked various part-time jobs including Shopping mall and CF models. I think these experiences I had earlier than other people became foundation for my acting. For the scripts, I memorize them by writing it- Because I am not smart. And because I feel that I can do natural acting when I know my partner's lines, I am trying to memorize other people's lines too. I think I am very lucky to join in PU38. I heard competition was very high for Jo Mi-joo role (It was 100:1 competition audition). Of course I prepared hard, but I didn't expect much. I thought it might not be a role a newbie like me could do, but I got the job. Frankly I was happy but also felt pressured a lot.

About Mi-joo character she plays, she said. "I think Mi-jo looks like porcupine with sharp spines because she has many stories-to-tell and thoughts but she is delicate inside. She tries to overcome difficulties by herself. I studied even tone of her voice not to show innocent when I play Mi-joo. Doing that I truly became to understand why Mi-joo behaves that way, and why she talks that way."

She says team work of PU38 is the best. "On the set I am the youngest. I also have lots of aegyo, so I am filming being loved by sunbae-nim(senior actors). Everybody plays jokes a lot, but it is so fun that I am enjoying it. People usually think I am timid by looking at my picture, but I actually have lots of aegyo and not picky at all. And Sunbae-nim make me feel at ease. As a newbie, I might not do well feeling timid and pressured, but they do the research on my character even down to my outfit styling, and make the atmosphere I can act comfortably, so I was/am able to immerse in Mi-joo character. It is given the set atmosphere is good. Filming is fun for sure, and project is interesting. Also we receive lots of love from the viewers. I wish shooting for PU38 never ends."

She said she is not the type staying quiet, so she mingles with other actors during break, and they give advices like "Doing this way seem to fit Mi-joo better'. She also mentions about Seo In-kook and Ma Dong-suk. "Seo In-kook oppa makes fun of me, but he takes care of me behind. I think he is 'CheunDaeRe'(cold/awkward outside, but warm/soft inside). He is mood maker who makes set atmosphere warm along with Ma sunbae. He monitors my acting in detail, and provide lots of advice and ideas. I must have luck with people..

Ma Sunbae has many nicknames, but I think 'MaBbeun-yi'(Ma + pretty) is the best fit. He is the person with highest merit in leading the atmosphere to be warm and nice. Looking at how he takes care of other actors and staffs, I thought he is 'really something'. There are many things to learn from him. When we act together, he gives me advices which make me understand why he is popular actor. But he has too much ad-lib. It is torture to hold the laugh in, but it is so fun that most of them are used in the broadcast."

About ratings, "During production press conference, Seo In-kook oppa said he'll make an art, not concerned about the ratings. Still everybody seem to love high ratings we are getting. Sunbaes check the ratings and smile wide. Actually from the time I read the script, I thought it'd make issue because the contents 'Let's scam righteously' felt refreshing."
She said she couldn't feel popularity though. "I feel lost. The reason PU83 is loved is not because I am doing well. Project itself is very good, and all actors except me do perfect acting without any hole, and I am getting benefit from it. I am too busy to realize anything different. Since I've never been outside, I don't know if people will recognize me, but number of my SNS followers has increased a little. Once in a while I read the comments, and I feel happy because people seem to view Mi-joo favorably."

She is happy playing her role. "People seem to feel catharsis watching my team conning big tax evaders in the drama. It makes me feel great playing Mi-joo character. I feel like I became a hero helping with defeating evil of the society. Also it is very fun to keep changing the occupation in the show. I am very curious and fluttered about what I will do next." She is hopeful for the future. "I am just a newbie and it is honor to work with many great sunbae. I want to become an actress who has unique charm and not gets tired of. I'd like to be an actress who is loved. I know people love me thanks to Mi-joo's charms in PU38, not the actress Lee Sun-bin. So I think next project I pick is very important and I'll work hard not to disappoint the viewers, meeting the expectations."

Most of these interviews feel so textbook-like and fan service. All say: It is honor to be in the project, learning a lot from others/PD and actors, and will work hard not to disappoint the audience.
Talking about Interview, One thing I remember from Seo Hyun-jin's (OHYA) interview is that her best time with highest satisfaction in her life is when she danced when she was young (from 4 years old to freshman in high school). And she is very envious of Han Ye-ri (Chuk Sakwang in Six Flying Dragons) who is her alumni because HYR is actress and dancer. I thought that was interesting.

I would love to see them together (Han Ye-ri and Seo Hyun-jin) in a sageuk project. As good as she was in Oh Hae Young, she has always been better in sageuks.

I guess we saw this coming, Idols running dramaland because talents alone doesn't equal good ratings and every dang broadcast station are obsessed with money.

omw, Han Ye-ri and Seo Hyun-jin in a sageuk together? I hadn't even thought of this before, and now you make me want it so bad. (also, why the username change? I didn't know we had a second Kiara here!).

I've said it time and again, I don't mind idols acting if they're as good as the likes of Im Shi-wan, Yoon Doo-joon, Jung Eun-ji etc. But the extent to which the broadcast stations go with idol casting and untalented idols, is ridiculous. And doubly ridiculous when you realise just how many dramas with idols in the lead have done a belly-flop on the Nielsen ratings, it's like they WANT to shoot themselves in the foot or something.

Fan, thank you so much for translating this!

I love Mi Joo, can't believe she's a newbie. She's so charismatic as Mi Joo that I almost ship her with Jung Do. But DAMN, ep 9 made me switched sides. That interaction between Jung Do and Sunghee, oh gosh, SIG and Sooyoung is hilarious in that scene. I was lol-ing a lot. And ep 9 really didn't dissapoint. A little woman positivity because we talk about actors a lot.

Questions: Which actresses have you seen in the most projects? Child, young, older & mature (any category you want) Does the number of projects you've seen them in heighten your opinion of them or lower it? And why?

Park Shin Hye is my young actress atm. I've seen her in 6 full length projects and 2 cameos. My opinion of her is heightened by the projects because while her character descriptions are similar sometimes, she still manages to make each one their own person.

I'll have to think about the other categories, especially child. My main comment will be further down.

I can't find my most seen child actress, shame on me. So I'm going to go with my fav at the moment, Kim Seol. She was in R88 and she makes me smile. I hope to see her in more projects *please don't let that be an jinx* (I'll figure out my most seen child actress another day)

Lee Il Hwa is my mature actress. I've seen her in 9 projects. I like every role except for her character in Prosecutor Princess. Each time I see her, it'sc omfortable even if her character is annoying.

It's between Kim Young Ae & Kim Mi Kyung for my older actress. I've seen both in at least 3 projects, if not more. It heightens my appreciation for KMK but lowers my appreciation for KYA. Even though both have played characters I didn't like, there's something enjoyable about KMK.

Older actress is the only one where my opinion has been affected by how many works I've seen. I wonder if that's because I hope them to a higher criteria or if it's because they are written to bother me, making me not want the actress on my screen sometimes.

Anyway, interesting to look into. I'll have to better my actors list so I can answer quicker next time.

Gong Hyo-jin. I watch anything with her in it and she is always so good. I also kind of like Yoon Eun-hye. Despite some lousy projects I like her giving it the best shot attitude. Its hard to predict the quality of a drama, performances are always so much better when scripting and co-stars come together but the two just appeal to me and I am always willing to watch anything they are in.

Caught a bit of Park Bo-young and Kim Seul-gie in a few projects and they are my favourite young actresses.

Recently saw Im Soo-jung in Happiness and now I want to watch every single thing she has ever done, the movie was surprisingly my first introduction to her.

yeah, that's one thing I really liked about Yoon Eun-hye's performances too - she really committed to them, and she never skimped on emotion even if other aspects of her performance were lacking (I heard a lot of people complain about her diction). It's a shame she didn't have a good eye for projects after Coffee Prince.

GHJ was one of the first actress I sought out when I started my dramaland adventure. But I actually haven't seen a project led her since the first two I watched, Greatest Love and then Pasta. She's cameo'd a few times. Jealousy Incarnate will probably be my first drama of hers in years. YEH does give it her all. And I really respect that.

I love KSG even though I mainly remember her for FBND. I just looked and she's been in 4 projects I've seen. Don't remember her much in Heartstrings. But her cameos in R94 and KMHM gave me life.

I haven't seen PBY or ISJ in anything yet, but A Werewolf Boy and Time Renegade are my list.

Which actresses have I seen in the most projects?

Young (18-25) - tie between Kim Seul-gi, Kim Ji-won and Jung Eun-ji (4 each)

My opinion of them goes higher every time I see them in a project - they're all natural actresses, though Kim Ji-won is the only one who's been able to take varied roles (and I'd say she's the most versatile of the three - between Heirs, What's Up and Gapdong, she can be virtually unrecognisable between roles). Kim Seul-gi and Jung Eun-ji have been typecast to an extent thanks to the success of their early roles/image, but Splish Splash Love and Sassy Go Go showed they're both well deserving of leading lady status and if a script gives them anything at all, they WILL make it good.

Established: Gong Hyo-jin. I love that I can basically walk into a GHJ project with my eyes closed and trust that it'll be good, and that she will be good. Every time I think 'wow her last drama was a tough act to follow, what's going to happen to this one?', she just delivers an awesome performance and upends everything. I just end up becoming a bigger fangirl with every project lol.

oh, and for under-25 I forgot to add Go Ah-sung to the list, probably because I'd forgotten I've seen her movies! Likewise for Kim Go-eun.

Go Ah-sung's been a solid movie actress since the time she was a teenager, and right at this moment she's the only younger actress I can think of who is capable of carrying a full show the way she did with Grapevine - the best drama of last year, imo. She's young but has the kind of subtlety and presence that most actresses don't even begin to develop until they're 15 years older than she is now.

As for Kim Go-eun.... I've heard mixed reviews of her acting, but she has a really natural style that reminded me of Gong Hyo-jin when she was in Cheese in the Trap. But I've seen her in four projects now and I'm taken aback by how she seemed like four different people in all of them. She may be patchy by some standards, but she's astonishingly chameleonic.

Older actress (45+): I think the one I noted most was Yoo Ho-jung, she's incredible and I could hardly believe the sweet woman from Sunny was the petty childish mother-in-law from hell in Grapevine. She's amazing, Grapevine made me a fan.

Your young list is amazing! I've seen them in the same amount of projects *for Eunji, I'm going to count 3 eps of TWtWB and the R94 cameos as 1*
Was it you or peeps that I was talking about a Eunji/Jisoo reunion with? *idk why but I confuse you two sometimes*
Can't wait to see KSG and JEJ explore new roles thanks to their game changing projects.
My KJW experience so far: TtBY -> Heirs -> W'sU -> DotS. And I get what you're saying. It's like different people. And they are all so real, whether you hate her (T, H), want to baby her (W) or respect her (D). She is so natural and brings out emotion in viewers. Can I fangirl anymore ?

I talked about GHJ above. I get what you mean about trusting her with any new project. If there is ever a drama lull for me, I'll look into the GHJ that I have missed.

I'm intrigued by GAS and KGE but have never seen them act. I was thinking about watching Grapevine while it was on, but didn't end up doing it *the length and family dynamics intimidated me*. Would you recommend it? Or any movie recommendations that might be on Viki or Dramafever?
At first I'd confuse KGE for KSE but Go Eun is making her way into my memory. I was a little excited for CitT but by the time I wanted to to check it out, everyone was saying off on it. Would you recommend it anyway?

I've never seen YHJ. I want to watch Sunny. What order do you recommend for Sunny vs Grapevine, that is if you rec Grapevine.

P.S. When the show was promoting and airing, I'd always get the Marvin Gaye song stuck in my head, lol

lol it could well have been me, I've been flying the flag for a Ji-soo/Eunji reunion since pretty much the minute it became evident he was the true second lead of Sassy Go Go. They NEED to act together again, like now. I've given up hope of seeing that happen in 2016 but really hope it'll happen someday anyway.

For Go Ah-sung, if Grapevine is too intimidating, you could check her out in Thread of Lies - it's a fantastic cast, and since it's a movie, it's only a 2-hour investment vs 30. Same with Yoo Ho-jung and Sunny (which is an AWESOME movie btw, definitely watch it!)

As for Grapevine....it's long but well worth the 30 hours - and it's a very different beast from your average kdrama, both in subject matter and tone (pretty mercilessly cynical and satirical, and not feel-good the way kdramas usually are) but I would most definitely recommend it. Us fans on the OT used to describe it as a 'neo-sageuk', because it really is about a power struggle and the effects of class on social position. In short - a definite recommend! Though if you only want to check out the actresses, do their movies first, since that'll take less time.

Kim Go-eun ..... Cheese became a mess but for her performance alone, I'd suggest checking out the early episodes, as far as 8 is good imo. After that, well, it goes from potentially great to hackneyed and rather average. But her performance as Seol was a high point. And just to get a dose of how chameleonic she can be, I'd suggest watching her in 2014's Monster with Lee Min-ki.

0

Certainly NOT me, because I'm not that interested in championing that. Haha. But I would so totally be down for it if the pairing comes true.

0

Lol, yeah. I was looking at an older article and saw it was you ? too bad it won't be this year. But if ever K-ent producers look in our comments, they'll see the suggestion and some possible plots kekeke

I'll look into Thread of Lies. I'll probably watch Sunny this week, now that LR is over. Idk why I have difficulty with movies but they have the best performances.

I wanted to watch Grapevine when it came out. But yeah, the 30 was intimidating. I'm about the finish a 20 episode Taiwanese (1.25 hours each ep) so I'm better prepared now. It's good to hear she and her evil mother in law did such a good job. Makes it that much more exciting. And I love a good satire.

I think I have a better chance at CitT now that I know not to have too high of expectations. With PHJ and SKJ I was psyched, but then it started falling apar right when I wanted to pick it up. But if the main cast rocked it anyway, I'll give it a go eventually. If it's too bad, I'll stop at 8, thanks for the suggestion. Maybe read the manhwa after, like I'm planning with LR.

Movie with Lee Min-ki?! I'll be searching for that too.

P.S. if I'm disowned for spending too much time watching television, it's totally OT's fault.

0

Ooh, that's an interesting question! I don't usually follow actors/esses, so I don't know. Give me a few minutes...

Ok. I haven't seen too many repeats so far as leads, but there have been a few.

Older: Kim Mi-Kyung. Is in everything. And I love her acting. I first met her as Ajhumma in Healer and expect a lot from her.

Gong Hyo-Jin (technically mature according to your age grouping, but still stunning in younger roles): I love her acting, and expect buckets from her too.

Park Shin-Hye (young): like you, I think she does a wonderful job of making a typical character her own.

Yoo In-na: When I see her acting, I expect to feel the emotions I'm meant to feel towards her character (disgust, sympathy, love) and feel them in force. Does a wonderful job as a villain or lead.

And finally Kim Yoo-ri. I know a lot of people like her acting... but I've always found she leaves something to be desired. Maybe it's the characters they give her, but they're always one dimensional.

Wow this became a long comment, but it was an interesting question!! :) Thanks!

That wasn't the only one I wanted to respond about but my sleep aid is starting to kick in and distracted me.

Praised GHJ higher up. Yeah, idk what I was thinking with the categories. They were vague on age group and should have been broken down further. I just don't know how. GHJ is different from the super late 80s and the beginning 90s. Then even farther from the super late 90s and 00s. I wish I could find a better breakdown. 51+ includes potentially 30 or more years.

What younger GHJ do you recommend?

I'm glad to hear some neutral positive PSH reviews. I don't know if you seek her shows out or it just ends up she's in shows you want to see. But it's hard to talk about Shin Hye without the followers, positive or negative wanting to go on and on. She does her job acting like different people and can five the character life that the script doesn't call for.

Sorry, it's long just a quote I wanted to share. Her portrayal of Go Mi Nam bugged me for a while, a little after I saw TTBY but especially after I watched Coffee Prince. But she said "I played Mi Nam the way Go Mi Nyeo would. She wouldn't be sure of much. She was raised in a religious orphanage." That helped me see her two part acting. Her role as a girl playing a role as a guy. It made me appreciate the little 'Mi Nyeo' actions she took.

Agree with you on Yoo Inna. My Inna journey: GL -> SG -> YWCftS -> OMHE. She has always convinced me she is a new person. I don't remember her role in SG but OMHE was a complete departure from the kind of girl GL and YWCftS had, though they were still different too. I want her to be cast as a lead soon. OMHE had a shared limelight kind of story. I guess until she is really at the helm again, I should check out Queen Inhyun's Man and My Secret Hotel. Do you recommend them? I'm not much into the murder genre but I think I can find the time for Yoo Inna & Namgoong Min *oh, man we're not supposed to be talking about males up in here*

I've only seen KYR ruining my life in KMHM. I know you're just answering because she shows up a lot for you. But I'd there a role that is the less offensive to an actress to play and to an audience to watch. Has she been give the chance to be 2D at least?if so, I'd love to check it out. *as much as I hated her in KMHM, she has grace and potential stage presence*

I don't watch mystics or highly supernatural. No ghost for me.

But that's good to hear. I looked her up again. I want to watch My Love Eun Dong and Marriage Contract, do whenever I get to them I'll be able to have a more informed opinion of her.

0

aww, sad! I didn't see this yesterday. Who knows, maybe you'll still see it today. :)

On GHJ I just saw which category her birth year would fit her in, I think she still does wonderfully in younger roles. As for my favorites of hers I like her character in Master's Sun the best but Greatest Love is the better drama overall. :)

On PSH, I think that's really just a biproduct of my views towards actors altogether. I have a hard enough time remembering names and faces normally, it's easier for me if I don't worry too hard about finding them on screens too, haha. :) ...Lee Jong Suk is a slight exception, but only a little. *oops, now I've mentioned a male too. Solidarity.* I think PSH does a fine job with acting, and I appreciate the dimension she gives her characters (like that quote you shared--that was cool!)

I recommend Queen In-hyun's Man, but not My Secret Hotel (although Yoo Inna's character there is one of my favorites). The rest of the drama was... so-so. Well, it was really good, I just don't do too well with too much angst. Still worth a watch, I guess.

And finally, on Kim Yoo-ri: she's very graceful and in command of herself, which lends itself well to a powerful stage presence. It carries over well into her acting, but I end up translating it as a distance from the character and that makes it hard for me to sympathize with/feel the multi-layered struggles going on within her characters. If that makes sense. @Wapz I think I did like her best in Master's Sun, although there was a scene at the end of Marriage Contract I enjoyed from her as well.

Lol, yup I'll probably be checking back on OT until Monday.

GHJ is between two of my categories. If I thought of the wording longer, I probably would have made a few more groups. Like all of her roles before this year fit into the young age group so... shrug. Won't be watching MS but I'm glad it's so highly regarded.

I get what you're saying on PSH. I'm the opposite. I remember names and faces. I love connecting anything, online friends who live in the same country, musicians to different songs, irl friends who have similar opinions but don't know each other, etc. So they tend to find me, lol. *I know. I'm not funny but I couldn't helpthe reversal ?* Yeah, that quote changed my idea of her, before I was neutral but that dimension she gives always makes me curious for the next role.

I'll forgive the LJS mention. Because it is LJS! ?

QIH'sM it is. I've only seen Ji Hyun Woo in 2 projects anyway *oops there I go again* I'll keep My Secret Hotel on the back burner, in case I need angst.

I appreciate the analysis of your KYR viewing. It was informative and positive.

Look back at the drama I watched,
I think I watched most of Yeo Jin Goo and kim yoo jong child roles, I forget the drama but I watched it all as I remember,

then
Gong Hyo Jin
Song Hye Kyo
Ji Sung
Lee Sang Woo (minus one warm world finished edition and his cameo)
Hwang Jeung Um
and many mom roles

tbh the amount of viewing does matter, but not that big anymore
I am not a regular watcher of PSY drama and I don't have any eager to watch her drama as fast as possible (maybe later sort of attitude)
I am not really in line with ha ji won and I never really excited for her drama,
I am not following cha tae hyun a lot but I'll watch him as priority in drama
I didn't like many Lee Sang Woo drama but I'll try it for sure

the familiar face just guarantee me to check it not necessarily liking or finished it

I haven't seen Kim Yoo Jung yet. I'm looking forward to Moonlight.

Raved about GHJ higher up. Idk how much more raving I can do. But I'll add that she is gorgeous and attractive. Love her for her talent but her looks are amazing too.
I've only seen SHK in DotS and 3 eps of TWtWB. I like her but she's not high on my list of most seen or favs. I'm planning on watching Full House because it's a classic. Do you recommend anything else?

I love HJE! I've only seen her 3 newest projects so I'd like to explore her filmography some more. I might even watch FH2 even though, I'm sure to feel some of flaws.

Yeah, there aren't many people whose projects I search for. And I don't drop often but I'll pause for months if it's just the one person, no story or other character helping the performance. I was thinking of doing that for Jang Nara and then got lazy. It has to be someone amazing for me to keep watching the same person. Don't want to be burnt out on the actress. And now that I'm watching so many semi live/live dramas, I don't have as much time to build up my kdrama history or build up my fan history.

My opinion usually goes higher when it is a person I didn't intend to watch but just ended up doing a cameo or extended cameo or I forgot would be in the drama and I was just watching for the plot. My opinion of the actress is affected by the unintended watch.

(btw, totally off topic and I think we talked about this a really really long time ago (if we never talked about it all sorry lol), but I started watching Comrades again and it is so amazing. Sometimes you'll see a drama so special that will change what you think is possible for the medium...this is definitely feeling like one of those dramas.)

I think we have at least 3 Kiaras lol.

Yea, I know we have good idol actors but the majority of the more popular groups are being pushed into acting by their agencies and it doesn't matter if they can act or not as long as they make money for them.

I get it that the music industry is short lived and they need to make a living but it's getting ridiculous how many and how easy it is for them to get roles over the more talented actors.
It's just as ridiculous as some actors who can not act but keeps getting lead roles.

I guess we'll just have to rant and live with it because I don't see anything changing in the near future.

Ooops this is a reply to pogo.

It's ridiculous that music is treated as such a disposable occupation by idol makers, to the extent that they assume their idols have some god-given right to an acting career even when they lack the skill to act. And the networks don't seem to learn even when said idol dramas end up flopping hard or performing underwhelmingly.

And the really dumb part is that agencies seem to only push their designated most-popular idols into acting, often over more talented bandmates who are better at the actual, you know, acting (and we don't find out until the other person scores a role at an actual audition instead of some backdoor handshakes). I don't understand why they try to impose their cocked-up idol-group logic on acting tbqh.

Maybe our ranting changes nothing but at least I get to express my disapproval volubly and at length, that's worth something!

@juniper

Agreed agreed! I was going with what came to mind and I know I'm missing more.

How can I forget about the legendary Park Geun-hyung of all people and favorite grandpa Lee Soon-jae. Forgot Yoon Jeong‑hee from "Poetry."

Kim Yoo Jung is on my watch list with Moonlight coming soon.

I saw Han Ye Ri in Commitment *which I block out of my head so it doesn't count* and heard her as Bokgil. Looking forward to Age of Youth
Shim Eun Kyung was good in Tomorrow Cantabile. I'm supposed to check out Sunny at some point.
Have only seen Son Ye Jin in Personal Taste. Any recommendations?
I need to add a Kim Go Eun project and Park Bo Young with A Werewolf Boy.
Only seen Moon Geun Young in 3 projects. My Little Bride was fantastic!
Park Eun Bin was the future version of the little sister in Dream High. She's also in the finale of Entertainer so when I get there I'll focus on her. She'll be in AoY as well.
Nam Ji Hyun won my heart and devotion in Angel Eyes. it doesn't hurt that she played opposite Kang Ha Neul cinnamon roll *wait no guys mentioned here* I did not know she was in TtBY for 4 eps. Looking forward to her project with SIG. Romanced my SIG and LSH! She's less than 2 weeks older than me and already hitting some GOALS!

I love Son Ye-jin so I'd watch all her movies if I can find all of them but the one that makes me laugh out loud was "Art of Seduction" with Song Il-Kook.
It's kind of stupid and hilarious at the same time. It's one of those rom.com that I don't even care if the leads have chemistry. It's more com than rom which I really like when I need a good laugh.

@Purple Owl

Kim Yoo Jung is still a teen ager (16) but she has been in around 18 movies and 29 dramas. She is a natural from a very young age. She was born to act.

It's hard to miss her in films because she has been a part of some of Korea's critical acclaim films like "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" with Korea's fame director Park Chan Wook, "The Chaser" with director Na Hong-Jin, "Haeundae" with director Yoon Je-Kyun etc etc since the beginning of her career (6yrs old). This kid has been working with the best filmmakers and A list actors in the industry.

I've seen almost all her sageuks, the ones that are available on line and she has been incredible in all of them. Her acting is starting to mature along with her age. She is smart, humble and down to earth despite her success.
She is one promising young actress and I can't wait till she is old enough to headline films/dramas.

I'm not sure what to recommend because she is good in everything so just google her and watch what you can find online.

Okay looking at Mature and Legendary 50s now

Jeon Do Yeon I haven't seen. I would watch Good Wife because of the buzz. But I didn't like it when it was airing at home and there's so many dramas airing that interest me more.
I haven't seen Go Hyun Jung but I've always wanted to see Queen's Classroom and it's been mentioned in this conversation a few times so it's moving up my list.
Lee Seong Min was in Fated to love You I just found out. I don't remember her. But I want to watch Emergency Couple, Take Care of us Captain & Baby faced Beauty.
Gong Hyo Jin I mentioned above.
I was watching
Prosecutor Princess when she cameo'd in OMHE. I kinda love her!

Kim Hye Ja I haven't seen, which is surprisingly when I see how many things she's been in that I've though of watching. She'll probably top my most watched list soon.

Done! Yay. Thanks for the new category name. Now I can have at least 5 sections.

It's hard to be disappointed with these fine actors even if the dramas or films they are in is less than perfect. They are always a treat to watch.

For Kim Hye Ja you can start with "Dear My Friends". She hasn't slowed down even at age 74.

Sandglass is a timeless masterpiece and it might be a good start if you are looking for a drama with Go Hyun Jung. You'd find great actors in it too like Choi Min Soo and the legendary Park Geun-hyung.

Your question makes me counting all drama i have watched haha. So here is mine.

Actresses have I seen in the most projects, tied for Jang Nara, Kim Seulgi & Park Min Young (3 each)

No preferences for young and mature-older actress, imo these brackets are usually good. Either because of raw talent or seasoned acting experience. Altho i hv eye for Kim Mi Kyung & Ye Ji Won.

My fav (how they able to lure me watching whatever drama they are in no matter wacky the story is) are Jang Nara, Gong Hyo Jin, Kim Seulgi and Jung Yoo Mi (SFD).

For JYM i liked her bcs of varshow and watching her drama gradually heighten my opinion of her. Her acting can be a bit over the top sometimes but it is always enjoyable nonetheless, i automatically checked her new project altho her last is not my style at all.

I like many others but it depends on the story, whether it's interesting or not. Which brings to weird case of Park Min Young. She is quite good but not really my fav. Yet i watch 3 dramas bcs she picks interesting story i guess. So yep story is one factor that plays big part in choosing what to watch generally for me.

Jang Nara is life and love. She's so cute and talented. But she can also be fierce and attractive. KSG does cameos like nobody's business. She's a scene stealer. I've only seen PMY in City Hunter and fell for her but haven't gotten around to her newer or older dramas.

As you can see from above comments by me, 1000 times KMK! How could I forget about Ye Ji Won? She has one of my favorite names and I've seen her in 3 projects which is the top number in her age group for me. So it's a four way tie between KMK, LMS, KYA & YJW.

They are all excellent at doing their jobs, creating different characters and connecting to the audience. Kim Young Ae is the only one whose portrayal of a character left over a bad taste. And that was as the evil grandmother in KMHM. So it proves how well she can act. But I prefer hating the older ladies but still caring about their wellbeing. *lol that's probably just me being weird*

Can I please have a OMHE type girlfriendship with these four? They could all be in different stages of life. The show could be HIMYM style. They gather at a different house each week, do an activity of leisure, and talk about their days with scenes played out and voice overs *what they didn't say but wanted to*

I wish I never thought of that. The age range is wide enough that there would be some eonnie-dongsaeng bonds and the style of each actress is unique. They could even be in different social statuses either changing from the state they were, in their 30s to now or be older/younger neighbors & alumni of the same school or a cousin pair among them.

I want it and I want it now.

Guess I should hurry up and watch Dear My Friends instead of pining over what may never be.

And you have pretty much everyone that I forgot or didn't add. I didn't forget the young child actors. I just went with my 2 favorites.

I forgot Jeon Kwang-Leol,Ahn Nae-Sang,Jung Bo-Suk, Oh Man-Seok,Kim Min-Seo, Kim So-Eun,Baek Jin-Hee,Kim Rae-won, Moon Chae-won, Lee Min-ho (93)...

A K-drama fangirl needs at least one oppa (lol) and that would be Lee Jun-ki for me.

My current idol actors : IU and Eunji

Then I have a long list of charming actors just to fangirl over like Kim Ji-Hoon, Jin Yi-Han etc.

0

I'll also add Jang Hyuk, Lee Seon-kyun, Jung Woo, and Jung Kyung-ho. And Sung Dong-il.

My oppa is Song Joong-ki I guess. I also have a crush on Yoo Dong-geun and Jung Bo-seok but I'm not sure if you can call them oppas anymore lol.

Looking at some of these names makes me sad--some of them haven't had a great role in ages. I would love to see Oh Man-seok in a lead role worthy of him again, but maybe he'll have more success when he gets older and starts getting some of those veteran roles? I can just imagine him being one of those evil old yangban in a sageuk. I'm still holding out hope that Kim So-eun can get a big break.

0

Oh and Kim Chang-wan. Love that guy.

0

@juniper

Yes, Jang Hyuk will not be forgotten. He is on my mature list. Adding Jo Jung-Seok, Honey Lee and Uhm Force.

I'm currently fan-girling over Oh Man Seok who is playing detective in Unit 38. He needs more screen-time and a freaking lead role already. Maybe he will be like Kim Gab Soo when he gets older. The next cigar man for a sci-fi mystery sageuk mmmm.
Speaking of Kim Gab Soo, I heard that he is going to make a cameo appearance in Mirror of the Witch so I am going to watch that episode.

You are going to love General Lee Seong Gye (Yoo Dong-geun) in Jeong Do Jeon but you'll miss Cheon Ho-Jin's bitch face haha. Oh wait we need to add him too. Sorry dear Cheon, didn't mean to forget you.

Jung Bo-seok makes me want to rewatch Giant and Shin Don because I don't want to watch Monster. Too many people to avoid.
Oh boss lady Kim Seo-Hyung just pop into my head. I'm adding her too lol. I'm glad she is in the Good Wife. I want her to boss Jeon Do-Yeon around for a bit before she goes back to Chungmuro.

Song Joong Ki, I am happy that he is crazy popular but part of me prefer the old Joong Ki who slayed me over and over with his short performance in TWDR. I hope that his popularity does not overshadow his talents. I want to grow old with him on my screen haha.

0

I'll add Yoon Je-moon, Kim Moo-yeol, Song Seon-mi, Han Jung-soo, Sung Hyun-ah, and Jang Hyun-sung. I get a kick out of Lee Ki-young too.

Monster is awful. I kept watching for JBS and Jin Tae-hyun, but I couldn't hold out any longer once they started hypnotizing people. Don't know what the writers are smoking these days but I sure don't want any, and the PD should never be allowed to do anything but daily dramas for the rest of his career.

I didn't know Oh Man-seok was in Police Unit 38. It's been off my radar, but maybe I should give it a try! Mostly I'm trying to finish Mirror of the Witch to make room for Age of Youth next week. It's getting really boring and draggy so seeing Kim Kap-soo will be a nice reward :D

And yep, started Jung Do-jeon. YDG only showed up for a few minutes in the first ep, but I'll be patient <33 Haha Cheon Ho-jin's bitch face is pretty epic but YDG has such a cool voice it evens out. I dropped 6FD pretty fast but I kept getting flashbakcs while I was watching, along with Shin Don ones of course. Gongmin ;__;

0

Adding Park Young-Gyu, Jo Jae‑Hyun, Choi Myoung-Gil, Seong‑mo Jeong, Lee Yoon-Ji, Shin Ha-Gyun, Son Chang-Min.

Can't believe I forgot our Beautiful Banker Kim Moo-yeol.

That's too bad about Monster. I figured that director Lee will only do SBS dramas and they had to pick up a different director.

I'm kind of worried about Yoon Je-moon and his DUI. I hope it's not going to affect his career.

Song Seon-mi <3. My fav crown Princess.
Han Jung-Soo was wasted in Jackpot :(. Not even a fan service lol. Thank goodness for Chuno.

0

I'll add Choi Jong-hwan, Lee Won-jong, Kim Hee-jung, and Gong Hyung-jin if nobody has said them already. I'm losing track lol. Also pre-army Lee Je-hoon.

I can't believe I forgot Jeong Seong-mo!! I love that guy!

I didn't know Yoon Je-moon had a DUI! I'm so out of the loop when it comes to that kind of stuff. I hope it doesn't effect his career, too. And that he gets help if he needs it or gets his act together if he doesn't--drunk driving is seriously not cool.

Han Jung-soo (and his abs) were so great in Chuno <3

0

I thought we were only allowed to pick one! But yeah, I agree with this list. Hong Soo-hyun was so amazing in The Princess' Man, idk if she's done anything after that weekend drama in 2013 tho.

It's a shame so many amazing second lead women never get that step up to main lead despite putting in one great performance after another, and then end up being locked out of those lead roles by producers saying "there are no 20s actresses!" and casting wooden/underwhelming idols or people whose main achievement in life is remaining free of plastic surgery.

I get so tired of the premium placed on ~natural beauty. Not only does everyone (male and female) wear a metric ton of makeup in drama, but the industry has pretty much shut out anyone who doesn't fit their narrow standard of beauty. I don't see why we're judging women who make informed decisions about their bodies in order to get ahead in an industry that doesn't care about talent unless it comes in a size 2, instead of judging the system that makes them feel like they have to get prettier to get ahead. I mean, as viewers we're going to react to individual cases, particularly if they seem unnatural/disturbing to us, but sometimes we lose sight of the bigger picture. At the end of the day I'd much rather watch Seo Woo than Suzy. Sorry, /rant.

0

Required fields are marked *

@Kiara - the younger gen of actresses has some incredible potential, even among rookies. Jo Boa is another one who could be great in the future - I was really impressed by her in Surplus Princess.

@juniper - ugh, you're so right. The fetishisation of ~natural beauty~ is beyond ridiculous, especially with the way it's treated as more of a priority than talent. I've even seen people saying a so-called 'natural' is better at acting because 'her muscles move naturally', but the irony is that some of the worst acting I've ever seen has come from idols (and some actors) who have had no work done. What's the use of all those 'natural' facial muscles if your eyes are basically blank in a scene?

And yeah, I would much rather watch Seo Woo or Hwang Jung-eum than Suzy. Good acting remains good acting, even when someone's had a few tweaks. And bad acting doesn't become good just because the actor had no cosmetic surgery.

@pogo. Yeah, what gets to me the most is the double standards. Korean actresses are expected to present as natural, and their beauty and sexual purity (hence dating=scandal) is constantly built up as virtue by the media and the public, but at the same time there is this obsessive desire to pick at and tear down the goddesses they are constructing--they're always digging up old school photos, speculating about bloat and weight gains, trying to catch them with men, going on surgery witch hunts. Sometimes it seems like dramaland is little more than a heterosexual marketplace, forget entertainment, let alone art.

0

@pogo

Yes I was talking about the new rookies. I watch mostly sageuks and K films so I'm only familiar with those that have been in sageuks or in a movie.

0

@pogo

Where is your long list of fav actors?

0

@Kiara - you mean the younger-gen non-child actresses I haven't named above but still like? I think you probably know most of the names already - Kang Sora, Baek Jin-hee, Chae Soo-bin, IU, Yoon So-hee, Gong Seung-yeon, Nam Ji-hyun, Lee Yubi (SWWTN did her so dirty and it's making me worried she hasn't been heard from since) and even Lee Sung-kyung (really good when she's allowed the room to play, as seen in Cheese). Some of them are imperfect, but I love that they commit to their performances and don't hold back on the emoting.

when it comes to movie actresses, I'm also looking forward to seeing Kim Tae-ri in The Handmaiden (speaking of which, it breaks my heart that we will probably never see Kim Min-hee in anything again). And of course, Han Ye-ri and Chun Woo-hee, they're near-flawless. Oh, and Park So-dam/Shim Eun-kyung. Chungmuro isn't dramaland, if you don't have the talent they don't play and I love that.

0

@pogo

Yes, the new generation of drama actors. You are more up to date than me.

I need to watch more Kang Sora. Kim Tae-ri is very green but was getting good reviews for Handmaiden. Hope she'll get more offers.
I loved Gong Seung-yeon in SFD. I wouldn't mind seeing her in another sageuk.

I'm not familiar with Chae Soo-bin but I'm looking forward to seeing her in Moonlight Cloud.

I haven't seen Yoon So-hee, Lee Sung-kyung, Chun Woo-hee in anything.

I'm rooting all of the young Chungmuro actresses that you mentioned. Hope they'll get more movie projects like Shim Eun-kyung.

Thanks for sharing :). Now I have a few new names to look out for.

0

Idk any of the young actresses you mentioned. I've heard of KSR, watched an ep of JJH, and will watch Moonlight with KYJ. I'll be working on this list, lol.

MGY, SYJ, PEB, PBY, GAS, JYM, KGE, HYR I talked about above. *gas is not a good initialisation, I'll go with KAS from now on*

SJH, KOB, SHJ, JHB I've never seen and will rectify that soon.

I'll look though the second half later

If you're interested in child actors, a great place to look is The Queen's Classroom. It's about a group of sixth graders and their mysterious, scary new teacher, so the kids have central roles the entire drama, instead of disappearing after the childhood section. Kim Hyang-gi gives the kind of performance actresses twice her age couldn't muster, and Seo Shin-ae and Kim Sae-ron are wonderful as well, as is Cheon Bo-geun (in addition they're all super cute). As an added bonus, Go Hyun-jung plays the teacher.

I have a major soft spot for Go Ara. She'll always be Na-jung to me.

I've only seen the old Go Ara and I didn't care for The Magician to be honest.
Something is wrong with me because she is getting some loving and I'm missing out because I didn't watch her in Reply.

Honestly, the hype from Reply was overblown in Go Ara's case. None of the series' female leads so far was perfect, but of the three, Jung Eun-ji remains the strongest as an actress, both in and out of the series.

The Magician was dire. And good proof that in Chungmuro, being pretty and popular alone won't cut it.

0

I've only seen her in Reply 1994, where she was legitimately good. I wouldn't be surprised if she's regressed since then.

0

Love, love, love KMK! Been singing her praises all day *and now it's 4 am*

I haven't seen Kim Hee Sun. Any recommendations?

I dropped Schoolgirl Detectives and I didn't see her first project but I've seen the latest 3. My favorite performance of hers so far was on H, J, M *but I still have 5 eps of Entertainer to decide*

I've seen Go Ara technically 3 times with her R88 cameo but it was a replay so idk if I'd count it. But I'll be watching Hwarang so that will give me three. And she was in a video with Kyuhyun that's amazing.

My opinion of these R girls doesn't rise or sink with each production. I like Go Ara a little more and that's been maintained. But I think they do a consistent job of doing what is asked of them, even if the characters don't always come to life. Go Ara is better off for me. I'm used to their face and voice. I think they can fill out the edges of a cast pretty well. But my R girl will always be Eunji.

if you haven´t watched Angry Mom, Faith or Wonderful Days, you should. she is so passionate, even fervent, earnest and I really like her voice. Pretty to boot as well, youthful and spunky. When her characters have some kind of higher cause, they become self-neglecting and she shows that so well.

Required fields are marked *

I'll probably go with Wonderful Days. I watched the first ep of Angry Mom and it was too dark for me, at least in that time period. Faith is too mystic, which is too bad since it seems to be one of the best LMH *oh, no mentioned another guy* performances to date. But avoiding mystics is what got me into anime -> Jdramas -> Jpop -> Kpop -> Kdramas in the first place, so not breaking that rule.

Thank you for the review of her acting and characters ?

0

Thank you sooooo much to everyone who answered. I was just curious but it turned out to be interesting and exciting.

Now I have a whole list of actresses to check out *which I didn't mean to happy, I promise* and I've got some pretty solid reviews.

It was cool to see the difference between actresses we chose to follow or watch VS the actresses we simply end up watching. That and the differences of opinions on each type.

Well, it's 4:30 and I'm supposed to be up in 3.5 hours to help my orabeoni. I got to all the initial replies and at least answered halfway. Not bad for a day helping with the baby, cleaning, watching media, and going to various Asian food trucks (Taiwanese, Vietnamese, Korean-Japanese fusion). Hasn't been the best week, month, year. But it was a good day.

See you y'all here tomorrow or on the various posts throughout the week. Hwaiting, 화이팅!!! ??

Happy Weekend to OT
I need to watch KDrama but it's really funny how I ended up watching many Jdrama and Jmovie, I blame this on Lee sang woo/Seo ji geon accident in Happy Home... I can't stand it, I will finish it after it aired.
He is a surgeon, why his hand must have some damaged, come on.

so for the Jdrama
Senpai to Kanojo (Her Senior) but I prefer to translate it as Him (the senior/upper classman) to Her (the girl) : at 1st I thought this was Kare to Kanojo Live action (a bit let down, my bad) but surprisingly, I like it. >>It's about the love story of him and her (senpai, 3rd year of HS and 1st yeard of HS with all the HS activity, that's all<<
The pace is super slow for me and the moment is not grand or out of the world. I think my love from this movie is purely based on nostalgic memory and how real everything plays in my eyes. It's the young love for a high schooler who just found love, with the stealing glances, the candy throwing, the after club meeting, the school interaction and the young jealousy.
What I really like is that heroine is easily crying/touched but she also gets over it fast than I thought. She can be mad today and tomorrow will just do the day, not giving the angry mixed reaction, instead showing that she is jealous, worried or not impressed.
Watching this make me realise that they are handling their emotion better than many adult dramas, there's not many complications. Or I maybe too biassed for the cheerful, less dramatic high school portrayed here, it's simple, not really the thing I will recommend in the highest list but something I appreciate to the most. I fully understand if someone said this drama is boring.
Omukae Death : Tbh I am not a fan of Fukushi Shota (ooh my Koinaka memory), but he fits this role.
>>It's about 2 people who help the shinigami (as their part-time job) to bring the ghost to rest before their 49 days is up <<
He is awkward but that's his character, it make me realise that have a great actor in the drama is not a must, it better to have someone who fitted the most. I can see Kamiki, Takeru Sato, Higashide or Sakaguchi Kentaro rocked this role to a T but it's good to have Sota there too.
The drama is really light and the acting is okay but I like the story of each ghost every episode, it resonate to me and it's enjoyable.
Someone mention Hapi Mari in last week OT , I recognise the title but I am not sure. I end up looking to my old manga stack list and read the manga to the end. Still, haven't watched the Drama but Oh god thanks, I love this manga so much.
>>It's about the Marriage Contract because the Rich Heir's Grandpa has unrequited love to the poor girl's Grandma and will favour the rich heir if he married the poor girl (but don't let the overused trope fool you, this manga go beyond that IMO)<<
What I like about this series is the sensible practical approach the characters take when faced with issues and conflicts.

........ It's something that happen to a lot of people, a couple quarrel over the communication, trust issues, past story and job. They talked and solved it because they can bear the journey of solving their difference . It didn't make "love" as the answer but it becomes the strength to endure the hardship and the force to getting to know each other.
Their problem arise because they didn't know each other and solved by understanding each other after talk.
The less enjoyable side for me is about the amount of crying the heroine did. It's too much for me....
I planed to wacth P38 squad but I just can't... how do you guys managed it...
and do you hear that Wallace Huo and Ruby Lin is getting married? ...bye for one of the hottest bachelor I've known (lol)
This is like the ship that resurge from the Depth of Ocean since I watch The Glamorous Imperial Concubine... I shipped their character so much since the OTP doesn't even make sense, but 2016 prove that anything can happen...

Hello, all:

Crappy week. Hoping all the violence, narrow-mindedness, and evil stops soon.

Dramas:

Let's Fight, Ghost -- Am loving this. Who knew I was waiting for a silly ghost story? This hits the sweet spot. A cute OTP, a mystery, good humor. The PD often holds a scene for far too long but I can live with that.

Wanted -- Wow! The ending of episode 8 actually got me excited.

Mirror of the Witch -- Wondering how the princess will get out of this.

Uncontrollably Fond -- Tried but not in the mood for contrived tragedy (which is weird because I was totally down for it in Marriage Contract)

Beautiful Mind -- Tried (three times) to get through the first episode. This might be just me and my living with a husband with Asperger Sydrome and a son diagnosed with developmental delay....but I have no patience with romanticizing characters on the autism spectrum. I have yet to watch a kdrama with one of these characters. I like Jang Hyuk but not his acting style so that didn't help. I might just jump in at the second episode to see if I can watch.

Squad 38-- Seriously liking this and liking how slow the romance (if any) is going. This is the first of my 2 drama crack.

Flower in Prison -- My second drama crack. I am really liking this. I'll admit that I worried a bit when the royal battles started rearing their heads because I was afraid court intrigue etc was being dragged in to make the story more "exciting." But I got calmer when I realized all this was already set up in the story a long time ago. It's all been subtly done from the beginning so when the drought, the death of Ok Nyeo's mom, the imprisonment of the supposed traiter by Sir Yoon (oh my gosh, that actor is sooo good!) all come together in this great subtle groundswell....I feel as if I'm in the hands of a writer who is a master of the slow burn. Am really liking this...and wow, oori weekend villainesses simply make my weekend. The chief shamaness in Mirror and our merchantess in Flower in Prison are showing out!!!!! Yay and kudos for ahjumma actresses!!!

Have a great weekend, all!

I'm sorry to hear things are so tense down there. It always makes me disappointed when I hear of people resorting to extreme violence to get a point across. Except in rare cases (say, a revolution to throw off a legitimately tyrannical government) I can't condone it. I'm sending prayers your way!

I'm glad you liked Let's Fight, Ghost though!

I always do this, if there is a drama that I want to watch and can't get past the first episode. I will jump to the third one and see if I can continue watching from there or it's really not my style. surprisingly, I usually end up watching that drama and even go back to the first two episodes to see what I missed.

Happy Friday!

Guerilla Date with our 38 Task Force teddy bear Sung Il -Ma Dongseok- on Entertainment Weekly
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlR0iQYCXts

Last week I ranted about CCTVs. This week, the non-working camera in the ICU in Beautiful Gong Shim made DanTe get resourceful in finding other possible working cameras. The parking structure camera worked (got the license plate number and in/out time) and so did the front desk camera (capturing both Soo Joon and Bad Uncle). Where is the IT guy anyway? I guess the doctor who knew the ICU camera was broken never reported it, cuz it’s still not working…Which brings up a whole other thought about the discussion on the latest Abnormal Summit where the rep from Mexico presented a new law allowing police/government to track your location with your phone since they don’t have a CCTV system in place. It’s a crazy world we live in!

Beautiful Mind – I thought the story line this week dragged>>,,..

Uncontrollably Fond – Woo Bin can look at himself in the mirror, flex and say, “Not too shabby, I look great,” and get away with it. I am a little confused with all of No Eul’s fainting/hospital/IV scenes present and flashpast, and now Joon Young’s recent disease symptoms. But, that does give it an older kdrama feel, the terminal cancer, hiding it, and the confession, birth secrets, antagonist brother you don't know about, regrets over one's lot in life, angry mother, schemes, and very handsome and pretty leads. Sucked in I am. “If you let her live I will give up all my happiness.” A kdrama promise with kdrama ramifications.

jdrama - A Girl & Three Sweethearts (Sukina Hito ga Iru Koto ) Episode 1 – charming (summer, beach sweetness (cakes!)^ ^

I also recommend this week's Happy Together with an adorable line up of child actresses now teenagers and EXO - lots of fun!

This week in my media addiction exploits~

Korean:

Entertainer – ep 14 *reading the db comments*
Jackpot – ep 5 *haven't watched this week*
Lucky Romance – ep 14
Pucca - S 2 ep 6
Doctors - ep 3 (? it so far, not hating the romantic vibes yet)
Uncontrollably Fond, W & TF38 - on DF only so I'll be behind, starts next week and I'm freaking out! & will start when I finish LR

Japanese:

Nodame Cantabile - ep 5
Haven’t You Heard, I’m Sakamoto – ep 10
Tanaka-kun is Always Listless – ep 11
High School Fleet – ep 11
Unhappy Go Lucky – completed
Love Live Sunshine – ep 2 (? it!)
Itazura na Kiss (1996) - ep 2 *it is not the best but it's important*

Taiwanese:

Say Again Yes I Do - ep 16 ? it!
I'm thinking of adding another Taiwanese but my actors overlap and I should organize my K-ent before my Ta-ent. I've had a good amount of suggestions.

American:

Girl Meets World – S 3 ep 7 tonight!!!
Seinfeld - I've been watching more than I want to. Funny show, just not my taste. But I'm seen about a season now.

Australian:

Mako Mermaids – S3 ep 13

Books:

Boys Don't Knit (in public) by T. S. Easton - finished this week!
Amazing book. Took a generic title and weaved a complex world that had a spot for me, the reader. I love Ben. I'm not in love with him. But he is a kindred spirit and I'll miss his perspective on his interesting circumstances. I'll look for others by the author.
Perfect by Natasha Friend - started Tuesday, 3rd time rereading. So far it's the book I remember. A teenager who is honest about her terrible life up to a certain level subconsciously. She'll give us the details but do nothing with the information, even when she's alone. Having the MC confront her issues will be helpful as I confront some issues. And the ED baseline unites our endeavors. I hope I love it just as much when I finish this time.

Music:

Westlife - I've listened over & over
2005+ Disney - love this era in music
Kpop - most of the boy groups are distracting but EXO the most rn
Tim McGraw - had a marathon, his lyricism is life
Thinking of taking a break from kpop and the past so I can explore new country and all other genres - now just to get a list of artists together. Any suggestions? *Twenty One Pilots for sure*

Movies:
Star Trek - coming up *so sad*
Finding Dory, Zootopia - I'm avoiding the theater but I've been hearing so much buzz about them.

Do you have any movie recommendations for recent home releases, up to 3 years old? I've been slowly phasing out of the movie scene but then I forget to ever watch them.

Thank you so much for you help! Have a good weekend everyone!

P.S. can't believe I got that under the character limit. Kekeke

Yes! I saw that somewhere in the thread. Do you know if it will be in Japanese with English subs? I'm guessing so but I really hate dubbing.

It sounds extra cute and cheesy. Just how I like my Japanese high school entertainment. I think it might already be up. I might add it to my list after I finish a couple animes.

Yay! For legal streaming. I hope Netflix keeps expanding on the international content front, beyond movies. And I hope there's more Viki projects and licensing for mainly Viki but DF too.

Didn't get much down entertainment wise today.
Lucky Romance - halfway through ep 15
Nothing Japanese
Say Again Yes I Do ep 17 and it just keeps getting better. I might actually have withdrawals.
Didn't get to GMW. But I watched more Seinfeld unintentionally.
Nothing Australian
Read some Perfect after I got my nephew to nap.
Continued with my 2005+ Disney Selena, Miley, Demi, JoBros, Hilary (is she post 2005?)

Hello world!
It is not a nice day today with the news coming from Nice, France. Terrorists have no race, religion, skin colour or belong to any political fraction. It doesn't matter where or how or for what reason terrorist attacks happen, terrorism should not be tolerated , whitewashed or excused FOR ANY REASON!
My deepest sympathies to all who was brutally murdered and injured today. RIP. May their families find peace and closure..

Dramafront is also not very exciting :( But I am watching,
1. Beautiful Mind: Jang Hyuk is brilliant!Putting aside all the WTF factors, I rather enjoy the performance of the actors, though I feel the involvement of a female traffic officer is actually superfluous at this point.

2. Gong Shim-Getting there slowly and finally, ve haf a kiz :) (though why it took 17 episodes to get there just boggles the mind)

3. MOtW-On hold until it ends. I want to watch it all at one go!!!!

4.Started on Bring it on Ghost-Not that taken with this, but I am watching this for Kim So Hyun-She is lovely here! (I am still sulky on having Taec as her co-star). Though I must say, I did find the two bumbling GhostNetters to be quite endearing <3.

5. Watching Jdrama Good Morning Call- Manga live action done Mostly right :D. Watching this for mindless cute fluff <3

Try old Tom & Jerry episodes. Or My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.

Or, if you're of the anime/cat-liking persuasion, watch Chii's Sweet Home - it's super, SUPER cute and very short. All of these are fairly effective, and far more time-efficient than dramas (I've been using them to distract myself from a potential health scare, and I can testify to the fact that they work).

Hello beanies!
I have been soooo busy these days, can hardly follow up drama posts. Most of the time marathoning dramas. But now have finally caught up.
Watching
Doctors- I like it that the central character in this drama is the female lead. She is the one with a 3 digit IQ and there is a lot more to love. But I love that she us upright, dominant and cute ^^. There is something absolutely inspiring about her personality.
UF- I like it. I love the way Kim Woo Bin stares ^^ but I seriously don't want the story to get so much complicated. And they have added some really serious issues that I wonder how they'll solve it. Pls join young-ah don't die.
Mirror of the witch- Pls don't get burned! Persimmon, stay alive we all are with you. We will be released from that greatest cliffhanger. I cant wait any more!
Waiting for W - hopefully I'll be writing about it next Friday. Fighting!

Ah! Happy Friday! I have all sorts of family around this week, and it's exciting to see them all.

In Dramaland:

Let's Fight, Ghost: I love it so so much. Just my kind of humor with a great cast of characters. I didn't get the creepy vibes from the doc, though, so I'll be interested to see how that turns out.

Mirror of the Witch: Yes! I started up watching again and am back into it as much as ever. Excited to see how it progresses from where I am (episode 13...)

Love Me If You Dare: I finished it. I finished it. I think I might die from the scary and the villain (HOLY CRAP THAT VILLAIN) but I did it. And the cute was so worth it. I started reading the novel online, but I don't know if I'll finish it... it's considerably more racy than the drama.

Beautiful Mind: I'm wondering if I should just follow the recaps on this one. I, like Carole, have tried several times to get into it and while I am really invested in his character I somehow lose the will to watch it every time I try.

Now all that's left is to anxiously await the premier of W: Two Worlds. Oh my gosh I'm on pins and needles.

As an aside, what's your favorite work to this point that either of the leads have been in--Lee Jong Suk or Han Hyo-Joo? Mine is Pinocchio with Lee Jong Suk.

Have a great weekend, all!

Finishing Another Oh Hae Young, this feels like achievement unlocked after stopped watching on ep 8 ? I like how it ends although the middle part kinda lost its steam. I am still annoyed by many aspects of it but at the end the drama is enjoyable. And how fun the special ep is!! The quiz is so fun lol

Catching up Doctors and feeling so icky with the whole student-teacher thing. Not only it feels wrong, but the relationship (and hyejung's change) feel like being fast-forward. Anyone feel like the teacher being too friendly it almost feels like he leads them on? I love Kim Rae Won and all but he seems to act too well he seems so charming it makes me mad ? Enjoying every character tho, i have my suspicion over Ji Soo's char which will absolutely crush my heart if it happens. Please don't T.T Anyway, am i weird if i become incredibly excited watching Moohyul on screen? It's been a while :3

AND IT'S WEEKEND!!! Time for PU38 & The Good Wife. So so excited for new eps yay yay yaaaaay!!

Hapoy weekend everyone, stay safe and have fun.

Happy weekend,everyone!

I'm waiting on episodes 9 and 10 of Police Unit 38 and kind of all out of things to say other than how much I LOVE THAT DRAMA. And it made me think about a former beanie @Jon G, with whom I've had many, many awesome drama discussions and who mentioned that they'd check back in to OT and see if there were any dramas people really loved enough to be buzzing about even there - well, this is one!

I did watch episode 1 of The Good Wife and I love it - never saw more than one episode of the original, but I think this one's got the potential to be great on its own. I'm really not into Korean legal dramas because they inevitably do something staggeringly stupid that no lawyer in any country would do (still haven't forgotten IHYV and changing arguments midway through a trial, right in the courtroom!), but this one looks like it might have its head screwed on right.

And of course, Jeon Do-yeon is a QUEEN. The effortlessness with which she commands that screen.... there are some dramas and some performances that are so good that they make almost everything else fade in comparison, and she's serving up one of those.

ALSO re: PU38 - that moment in early episode 7 when Jung-do and Sung-il see each other across the street and wave hi to the tune of the Jang Ki-ha cover of Heard It Through the Grapevine that was the ending theme song of HITTG.... I love that. Kind of like genius drama recognising an even more genius drama, and it makes me think even better of the team behind PU38 for it - they have good taste!

Seems like we are on the same boat pogo. I'm on the Unit 38 train till the end together with Good Wife.

I'm not into legal dramas either and it takes me a while to absorb these cases even when it's not that complicated. I'm less critical so I don't have much to say.
I'm here for Jeon Do-yeon. I'm totally glued to her face when she showed up on screen.

I admit, I had a small additional reason to check out The Good Wife, which was that Lee Won-geun had a supporting role in it and I've become a fan of Crinkles since Sassy Go Go. But I think the younger cast including him and Nana, are holding up well so far in the little bits we've seen of them. I suppose being only very slightly familiar with the

Jeon Do-yeon has such an incredibly compelling face, I could spend the entire hour just looking at her having thoughts.

poor Sung hee did she unintentionally give information about their plans? I don´t quite understand cause there were no subs.

From what I can tell, it wasn't Sung-hee who is the danger, it's Mi-joo who's going to give them all up (nooooooo!)

And I guess we have our answer to how Sung-hee ends up being part of the con, lol. I knew her loyalty to Sung-il would be a huge factor, but the way it happened has me cackling.

0

but Sung Hee talked to Mi Joo, what were they discussing? I meant that perhaps the information SH shared MJ took it and ran

I have been conned. totally conned by this girl, but I always knew she was as good or better than Jung Do

0

Sung-hee called Mi-joo to give the con team the heads-up that Sung-il was being tailed so they could cover their tracks and not get arrested - she actually saved their butts. The second time, she called to ask Jung-do to meet her and give up the con (which she had to do via Mi-joo's phone because it seems that's the only one of the team whose number she has).

Mi-joo otoh seems to have a mild case of unrequited love for Jung-do, and is not thrilled that he's still into Sung-hee even now. I wonder what the bad guys did to get to Mi-joo though. Jae-sang has been trying to destabilise the time, first with Sung-il but it failed, and now with Mi-joo it looked like it worked.

or did it? please give a twist, please give a twist!!!!

Not watching any K dramas per se. I did watch two KBS drama specials. Contract Man and Strange Fairy Tale. I enjoyed both of those. The wife watched and I kind of watched The Queen and the Eunich, that was interesting as it was a C drama and the lead actress is Japanese.

In Japanese shows, watched the first episode of Totto TV , about Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, who among other things, was Japan's first television actress, a talk show host and a best selling author. She is an interesting character. She is the author of a charming book, Totto-chan: The Little Girl At The Window, which is a delightful read.

your comment on the Queen and the Eunich peaked my interest. Just for the sake of the information, the drama is based on a book written by Japanese author, Jiro Asada. He publicly told that he became an author in order to write the novel.( Soukyuu no Subaru). The drama was co produced by Japanese(NHK) and Chinese. The Japanese actress who played the Queen is really well known actress called Yuko Tanaka ( best known as the lead actress of Oshin)
I hope to watch this drama soon.

Has anyone ever had a dream K-drama style? I had one the other day and I have been waiting all freaking week to tell someone about this! lol

It's starts in a school cafeteria. (Or maybe that's where I start to remember it more clearly) There are cafeteria workers discussing the fact that they have left over food and it's getting worse. (It seems so ridiculous but they were discussing this like it was a serious problem to be solved) So I asked is having leftover food bad? And one worker said in a conspiracy theory sort of way, "We never have left overs." So my friend and I (Btw the person I dreamed about I haven't seen in YEARS) decide we will investigate. The cafeteria workers are all like what can you guys do? And I actually replied in my dream, pointing to my friend, "Look at her. Stick a bowl of guacamole in front of her and we'll find out everything." (Seriously. I have no clue why dream me said that. Rotfl) And then it cuts to an open field where a man and a woman are talking. She shows him a pic of this hot Korean guy and his face is half hidden by a crowd. (He actually looked a bit like Ha-nuel from Entertainer.) The man goes, "that's Min-jae." And the music in the back is all like dundadundadundada. It was more to it but I can't remember it now. I should have wrote it down! ?

When I woke up though, I said to myself, your addiction now has you dreaming k-drama style. ?

I had a few dreams K drama style too, I think it was probably 1 year ago when I watched dramas like there's no tomorrow and watched Gag Concert on a regular basis too. Can't remember much of it, but I knew it involved the gagwoman Kim Ji Min (who was the maid in Mask) and I solving a crime involving people poisoning infants lol. It really felt like a real drama LOL so I thought I must have been watching too many dramas.

I remember I had a dream that my boyfriend was Healer (but not Ji Chang Wook? Does that make sense?) while I was watching Healer last year too lol.

Here are my embarrassing kdrama related dreams:

I tend to forget my dreams quickly, but I do recall dreaming many versions of alternate endings for Reply 1988 in which Junghwan had a happy ending or at least some closure for a whole week. I would wake up and actually start sobbing when I realized that it was not real. (Reply 1988 was a strange stage of my life)

I am also sure that I once dreamed that I was best friends with Ryu Junyeol. We had deep conversations about life and stuff...except I spoke French and he spoke Korean. We didn't understand each other but we seemed to be getting along just fine lol

0

Required fields are marked *

based on what I know:

Weekend Dramas
-mostly family dramas (in public channels)
-have higher ratings coz people are at home

Weekday Dramas
-have bigger budgets coz they're mostly those dramas being sold to other countries
-have low to moderate to high ratings depending on the buzz and popularity

Thank you. I've read people go like "even if this is a weekend drama + opinion" sometimes and made me wonder why there seems to be some prejudice against weekend dramas. Now I understand why : so weekday dramas are more catered towards the international market I guess.

0

Required fields are marked *

as I knew beside the time slot difference

Weekend drama mostly consists of family feuds type of stories, have multiple loves story and makjang-type, too many things happen with 50+ episode

Weekday drama consists of 1 prominent love story or the main story. have 16-24 episode (shorter than weekend drama) and more focused story

Weekend drama will tell you about all the family affair and their love story, while weekday drama will tell you only the important story and will not covered the whole family

hope this helps ^^

ah right, weekend drama always has the least interesting couple and get judged to have lower quality because of the draggy-ness of the amount of episode with makjang trope,

it also considered as the ahjumma's drama that doesn't need much logic because the messy plot as the crack in that drama, it's like you don't need to be that smart to watch and enjoy it it and many people find the plot stupid

but not all of weekend drama is like that,

Ooh then may I ask what's the difference between weekend drama (eg MBC 20:40 slot, with shows like Happy Home, Jang Bori etc) and weekday non-primetime (eg MBC 19:15 slot like The Dearest Lady or Princess Aurora)?

I know that the weekday non-primetime shows are longer (100+ episodes) but 30 mins vs weekend 50+ episodes but 1 hour. But in terms of the storyline, I feel that both revolve around the family feud stories + Makjang as you mentioned.

0

Required fields are marked *

as I understand
weekend drama like Happy Home and Jang Bori have the more complicated story with better quality, have a better actor and overall have higher production, they like the main dishes since they run in the prime time of weekend just like weekday drama prime time. So they cater to a broader range of audience, have many cast with good public recognition.
Non-prime time 30 minutes on weekday is consider a little bit shallow and low quality since not many people has time to watch it.. (or maybe it already changed now)
I remember it called daily dramas , since it usually set in contemporary times, describing a family protagonist who usually sacrifice themselves for family happiness but run for 5 days not only in weekend

and there's also morning drama . . . never watch and as I remember mostly consist of a re-run of many popular dramas

another info
In South Korea, prime time usually runs from 20:00 to 23:00 during the week,
while on Saturdays and Sundays, it runs from 18:00 to 23:00

Family-oriented television shows are broadcast before 22:00,
and adult-oriented television shows air after 22:00.

Ps: feel free to correct and add my info if you know something ^^

I could be wrong, but:
- weekend drama: mostly keep scenes PG-rated, since the whole family could be watching
- weekday drama: we might see more actions (i.e. more and better kisses), if it's in a late hour timeslot.

I think I've been stupid this last week. I just went on and watched all ongoing dramas. From doctors, five children, beautiful mind, uncontrollably fond and bring it on ghost to mirror of the witch and gong shim. Now I'm stuck with all but unfinished dramas. I'm thinking of stopping the live watching nonsense and just going back to the old routine where I can not watch anything unless it's all done and complete. YET I can't expect form my self to NOT watch "W' next week :S
I really want to stop myself from watching W and uncontrollably fond at least.
I love those dramas that I get to marathon more than the one's that I watch live, that's why I'm going to stop these two because they are the most interesting to me right now.

Hope everybody is having a good Friday :) I think I'm currently in a drama slump of some sorts - I used to be able to complete a 16 episode drama in 2 days but right now I'm struggling to complete one in a week. Finally caught up with Lucky Romance and Mirror of The Witch since it's Finale Week and I don't want to be spoilt hehe.

Lucky Romance: Overall I'm still disappointed with what the show could have been, but I hope that W would help me erase some of the horrible memory that Lucky Romance left.

Mirror of The Witch: Think the plot is slowing down, considering they still haven't defeated Hong Joo at this point (I'm only halfway through Episode 18). Thought they should have ended this show at 16-episodes.

Marriage Contract: Picked this up some time last week, and will continue right after I'm done with MOTW.

I was planning to catch up with Beautiful Mind, Doctors, Wanted, Police Unit 38 BUT there's no time for me to watch all of this. Probably will pick them up nearer to their finale week. Will start on The Good Wife and Second To Last Love soon.

Wow how do you guys prioritise which dramas to watch first?

Lucky romance: Tried 1st episode yesterday and overall, it reminds me so much of She Was Pretty which unfortunately I did not finish. The tone of the show, the zeze HQ, and obviously, the lead actress - all very much like a rendezvous to SWP.
However I found HJE toned down a lot of her overacting style (esp compare to her KMHM days) and I like the unique story, so I will watch some more.
And TBH, I might go all the way to last episode even just for.... Lee Soo Hyuk's voice.

Come back ahjussi: Lots of laugh in the first few episodes but I cannot stand Rain's screaming and over the top facial reaction. And urgh that voice-over, we are not 10 years old! Honey Lee is such a gem though. I remember her in Pasta to be very pretty but that's it, while here, she is awesome. She can be hillarious but she can also cry very convincingly. Her charms and the way she carries herself reminds me of Jeon Ji Hyun.

Oh Hae Young: Oh I love this PD and the casts. Whilst obviously the cracking chemistry seals the deal, without the beautiful cinematography and on-point storytelling, this show would not be as addicting and gut-wrencing as it is. I watch this as a whole (not week by week) and though I do get the complains that the plot runs a halt on the last 1/3 of the show, I still like it overall. I feel like the writer has the plot outlined already so it never feels like they are adding (too much) unnecessary events to prolong the time. At the end of the day, all questions are answered and we get more lovey dovey + funny antics from the other couples so all is well.
It may be imperfect but it reminds me what it feels to fall in love again. And needless to say, I very much adore the OTP, I watched Lets Eat 2 and Discovery of Love before and though the shows were good, I wasn't into the OTP that much (even though I love Yoon Do Joon). I guess Eric and Seo Hyun Jin really make each other shine.

Discovery of Romance: I watched this more than a year ago for Sung Joon and didn't finish it because that ship sort of sank halfway. I guess no one can't really get over an ex as hot as Eric. I didn't find him particularly handsome in OHY (I blame that boyband haircut and oversized shirt/trench coat) but rewatching DOR now, wow that man is SO damn fine. And even though I thought he was sometimes too stoic in OHY, after rewatching DOR, I realised that's how he wants to portray Park Do Kyung. He's actually quite good in a way that he doesn't remind me of PDK even though I watch these 2 dramas back to back. He may not be able to do eye-acting as fine as Yoon Shi Yoon (in MOTW) or Park Bo Gum (in IRY), but he has the most gorgeous bedroom eye in dramaland.

And I also have to say, one of the main reason to rewatch DOR is because of Kim Seul Gi (when I watched this the first time, I didn't know any of the actors) - I can't help thinking, how kickass would it be if KSG played Anna in OHY. I miss seeing her on screen!

Oh! I discovered something really interesting this week. Netflix has coproduced a J-Drama in association with Fuji TV and the show is now available in its entirety on Netflix (at least in the US). This is not some kind of after the fact pickup, both the Japanese network and Netflix are mentioned in the opening credits as co-producing. This is really interesting because Netflix just a couple weeks ago launched in South Korea. Doona Bae of Sense8 did some promotional stuff for it too. (You may remember her from God of Study, modeling for Louis Vitton and a whole bunch of Wachowski films including Cloud Atlas). A while back when Cinderella and the Four Knights was still trying to find a network I mentioned I wished Netflix would just pick it up but was unaware at the time Netflix wasn't in Korea yet. But now it is. How long do you think it will take Netflix to cut a deal for a 100% pre-produced high end K-drama which they take right to their service leaving both DramaFever and Viki in the dust? I'll give it a year. Oh and as to the J-drama in question, it's decent! Nothing really special it's the story of a high school girl and guy who accidentally rent the same apartment and become roommies - think Mischevious Kiss but without the extended families. It's called Good Morning Call. It's 17 episodes long, I'm about halfway through.

UGH. So many dramas. Some that are entertaining enough to make me watch them, but not enough for me to love + some others that I think I could actually really love, if they don't disappoint. That said, I'm still just sitting here pining for W- Two Worlds. Also got back to marathoning 6FD (awesome! 10 eps to go...) & started slowly rewatching MnD. This drama just weirdly comforts me whenever I'm having a bad week.

Dramas I might love:

PU38 - I'm waiting for my friend to catch up so I haven't been able to watch since ep 6. Excited to finally pick it back up this weekend.

The Good Wife - Only caught an episode or so of the original. Loving it so far. The cast chemistry is amazing. Not really sure I can say anything about JDY that hasn't already been said.

Bring it on, Ghost! - I'll be honest, I wasn't going to watch this and I have a feeling it could get bumped down to the other category. It's just...I love it so much & I'm so entertained...to the point where I'm still a little bitter. I just...I imagine someone like Ji Soo (I know, I know, everyone throws his name out, but have you seen them in Page-Turner?) as Bong-pal and see what the show could have been. Don't get me wrong, I think that this is probably the best I've seen Taecyeon and I quite like him as the character. The problem is that I enjoy the written chemistry between Hyun-ji & Bong-pal so much that I can't help but wonder. I'll probably get over it. Probably.

Dramas entertaining enough to make me watch them, but not enough for me to love completely:

MotW- I hate having to put this in this category. I've gone from loving this wholeheartedly to appreciating many aspects of it. Still very invested + the acting is amazing, but, I don't know. JB & GF capture why I still like the show a lot in their recent recaps, but I'm finding that many of the criticisms in the comments point out exactly why I can't seem to enjoy it as much as I want to anymore. The ending could make me love it again. We'll see.

UF- We're getting to the good stuff now. I'm just trying to decide whether the good stuff is good enough. Well, until I can figure it out, there's Im Joo Hwan. And Pororo.

BGS- I love and am bothered by so much about you. Please end with lots of scenes of our OT3 together so that I can remember you with mostly fondness and not aggravation at the lack of Gong-shim's successful underdog story (seriously. what happened to that?).

BM- I can't seem to cut ties with my desire to watch this drama, even though I still need to catch up with 6 episodes.

I've dropped Doctors for now because does it look like I have time? Farewell, KRW. I'll always love you and I may still come back to you as long as this drama doesn't actively piss fans off towards the end. Also dropped Wanted without really meaning to.

Skim-watched the end of Lucky Romance for Dal-nim and Ryang-ha. LOVE THEM.

Did I mention I just want W already?

Still in my j-drama search venture lol. Finally I watched something this week and this was a surprising find. So I clicked on the 1st ep of ' Kyou wa Kaisha Yasumimasu'/ I'm taking a day off, thinking it would be another typical office drama, but it was nice to see it was from my favorite genre, noona romance hehe.Haruka Ayase is becoming my personal favorite day by day, and it was quite a different character from hotaru, though aoishi san is still an oddball,a role which suits Haruka best. After reading the reviews though, people don't like sota fukushi much I guess, but lol he's so adorbs, also watching two people from two different end trying hard at something new was entertaining, not to say japanese quirks are here too,as the female lead always read little too much between lines and take every words out of yuto san's mouth too seriously.
All in all really loved the drama, and I'm starting to see a pattern by now from jdramas. It must be the culture difference too,but they tend to do comedy in a strangely odd and comical way, which might not be everyone's cup of tea. But,I do like it.After watching too many kdramas, jdramas are like refined editions of the day to day k-drama romcoms...not sure if I convey my feelings rightly.Though have to say,I have not found many of them, yet. And the lists from different websites don't attract me either. So it would be tough road from now on in my pursuit of finding rom-coms that suits my taste lol. Anyway,I have already bookmarked the j-drama recommendations from OT from last couple of weeks! So need to find a new one to get over this one soon yeah.
* PS: But this doesn't mean I am out of love for kdramas lol. From time to time I come back to kdramas..but this is quite a dry season, goes without saying. So far I've checked quite a number of dramas only to leave them after second or third weeks.Only one that has still kept me hooked is beautiful mind, the story is solid and jang hyuk is mesmerizing.I love him and PSD's character together and wish the drama was longer.

Though I did try to watch last cinderella too,but it's awful.May be the innocence of the characters from KWKY sticked to me most. But do you think matrimonial chaos is good enough? Or is there anything good from recent jdramas? I have also downloaded ep 1 for Boku to Star no 99 Nichi,so that's next in line.

@John, yeah, she was solid in Moribito, I enjoyed her action scenes and the fight choreography was good. I was kinda meh that she seemed to be getting typecast in the "OL who imagines too much" roles, since she's capable of much more, but I'm glad Moribito came along. Can't wait for season 2.

@limbo, Last Cinderella was awful, I dropped it after a couple of episodes. If you want solid rom-coms, I recommend the following:
- Nodame Cantabile (not really rom, but a lot of com and fantastic music)
- Love Shuffle
- Love Revolution
- Long Vacation
- Kekkon Dekinai Otoko

Ok. Been away for a while! Here in Oregon we have this three day hippie fest called the Oregon Country Fair! It's a ton of fun! I worked there and was gone for 4 days so missed out on some episodes.
Still, I got back on Sunday afternoon and ended up marathoning all the episodes I had missed! I really am a drama addict!

Right now I am watching...

Doctors- Enjoying this show much more now that I am not expecting so much. I am enjoying the little character moments and Kim Rae Won (the real reason I am watching this). If Kim Rae Won wasn't doing such a good job this show would be difficult to watch. He manages to take bad writing and make it seem better than it really is.

Uncontrollably Fond - This is my new Wednesday drama and I am really enjoying it! Thank god it came along because I was trying to watch Wanted but I just was not feeling that show. Kim Woo-Bin is playing his usual asshole character but he just does it so well. I will continue to watch.

Police Unit 38- Gosh I love this show! Seo In-Guk is amazing as always. He is such a good actor. I am really enjoying the rest of the cast too, it would be nice to have some deeper character development, get to know our cast a bit more, but I am hopeful that will develop as the show progresses.

Five children - Still watching but I am not enjoying as much. The show is starting to annoy me and I would use a bit more plot movement and less bratty children. Still this is the farthest I have watched a weekend drama. Usually I don't go more than 24 episodes in a drama.

I have been away from DB for about four years now. Wow. It feels a little strange to be back. I don't see anyone I recognize, so hello everyone! :)
I just got caught in the rain yesterday, and it made me super glad that I come from Bollywood and not Kdramaland because It was basically raining sideways and I ran laughing down the sidewalk and jumped into the strong currents that pooled at the street crossings. Needless to say, I got wet. Completely, soaking wet. I then proceeded to spend half an hour in an air conditioned bus in my drenched clothes and wet hair.
If this was a Kdrama, I would be at death's door right now. It would probably require FOUR humidifiers for my recovery. Yes, that serious. But, fortunately, I am Bollywood where at least two wet sari sequence in the Moonsoon rain is mandatory, so I shall suffer no ill effects!

I'm laughing my ass off right now because coming from a mix of Bollywood/Hollywood stuff the rains of doom are one of the wierdest aspects of dramaland.

Also from Bollywood - rain means dance sequence in thin sari with hot male lead and of course, with no ill effects whatsoever the next day haha

The hot male lead will be semi naked and his ass will hang out if you imagine it juuuust right.
